Agile, 5' 11" tall keeper born in Crayford who began his career with Slade Green in 1967 and won a runners-up medal in the Greater London League. Allen then joined Charlton as an apprentice on 1.12.69 and signed professional forms on 4.12.70.

At that time he was understudy to future Margate player Derek Bellotti and in March 1971 Allen joined Margate on loan, making his debut in a Southern League game at Chelmsford on 13.3.71. Two days later Allen missed Margate's home game with Dover due to getting on the wrong train but he went on to make 14 appearances before the end of the 1970/71 season. On 19.4.71 his display in a 0-0 draw with Barnet at Hartsdown was described as "distinguished" by the Isle of Thanet Gazette and on 24.4.71 Allen's performance in a 2-0 win at Worcester earned him further plaudits. He was said to have been "brilliant" and "pulled off save after save".

At the end of the season Allen returned to Charlton and he made his senior debut in a League Cup tie at Bristol Rovers on 5.10.71, shortly after returning from a spell on loan there. He also made two Football League appearances during the 1971/72 season but returned to Thanet to join Ramsgate on loan early in the 1972/73 campaign.

Later that season Allen had a spell on loan at Exeter and in May 1973 the move became permanent when Charlton released him on a free transfer.

In the summer of 1974 Allen joined Dartford after being released by Exeter. However he was released by the Darts in March 1975 after making just nine appearances and he later returned to Slade Green. Allen was still with the club during the 1976/77 season.

In 2006 Allen was living in a village called Vigo in North Kent.
