5' 7" tall midfielder born in Murrayshire, Scotland who began his career with Gillingham. Andy played for the Gills' junior teams during the 1969/70 and 1970/71 seasons but never made a senior appearance. He scored six goals for the youth team during 1969/70 and also scored once in four reserve team appearances. Andy then made eight reserve team appearances during 1970/71 as well as continuing to play for the youth side.

Although born in Scotland, Andy was part of the England Youth squad which won the 'Little' World Cup in 1971.

In June 1972 he joined Margate, Andy was 18 at the time. He was made captain of the reserves and played exclusively for them during the early part of the 1972/73 season, never making a first team appearance. Andy was unhappy about that and in October 1972 he left the club by mutual consent.

He joined Canterbury for the 1973/74 campaign and Andy made 67 Southern League appearances for City, scoring seven goals, before moving to Ramsgate in the summer of 1975.

Andy became the Rams' captain but in January 1976 he left the club due to a financial crisis.

He immediately linked up with Dartford and made 11 appearances for them before the end of the 1975/76 season.

Andy's next move took him to Faversham for the 1976/77 season and he then joined Medway for 1978/79. The club changed their name back to Chatham in the summer of 1979 and Andy also spent the 1979/80 and 1980/81 seasons there.

He joined Sheppey for the 1981/82 campaign and by the 1984/85 season Andy was their player-coach.

In the summer of 1985 Andy returned to Hartsdown Park almost 13 years after leaving Margate and he made his debut for Thanet United when he came on as a substitute in a 2-2 home draw with Bromley on 7.9.85. The match was an FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round tie and Andy made his first start for United in the replay at Bromley on 10.9.85. Thanet went down 2-1 but he had the distinction of scoring United's consolation goal. The Isle of Thanet Gazette described it as a "tremendous strike" from fully 25 yards. Andy then enjoyed a run in the side, he initially played in midfield but was then switched to right-back. However in November 1985 he was released having made 14 appearances (two as sub) and Andy then joined Sittingbourne.

He later managed Faversham for a couple of seasons before resigning early in 1989 to become first team coach at Sittingbourne.

Andy stayed with the Brickies until early 1992 and had a spell as the club's caretaker manager shortly before his departure.

At the start of the 1992/93 campaign Andy was Tonbridge's coach and in February 1993 he returned to Margate to work as the club's joint manager alongside Mark Weatherly. Andy stepped down as joint manager at the end of the 1993/94 season but initially stayed on as club coach before finally leaving Margate in February 1995 due to work commitments.
