In July 1974 Bernie joined Margate on a month's trial and appeared in the club's pre-season friendlies. However he refused the terms offered for a permanent deal and moved on to Maidstone instead. During the 1974/75 season the Stones loaned Bernie to Dover and he scored three goals there.

In August 1976 Bernie returned to Margate from Maidstone, initially on loan, and made his debut in a 2-0 home defeat against Wealdstone on 28.8.76. His move soon became permanent and Bernie went on to make 29 appearances (four as sub) during the 1976/77 season, scoring three goals. He usually played in midfield but also featured as a striker and he was never a regular in the side.

He left the club in the summer of 1977 and later played for Dartford before linking up with Dartford Glentworth. Bernie's spell there included the 1978/79 season.
