Having disposed of Tonbridge in the 4th Qualifying Round Margate travelled to Third Division Brentford for a 1st Round tie. Johnny Roche gave Margate a first half lead before Mike Block levelled matters just before half-time. In the second half prolific marksman John Dick shot Brentford ahead but six minutes from time Margate's own ace goalscorer Alan Blackburn headed in an equaliser to send the tie to a replay.

Margate's side was unchanged for the replay but Brentford made three team changes and two second half goals from Welsh international Dai Ward saw the Bees through.
