Carl then joined Kent League Sittingbourne for the 1979/80 campaign, his father Peter, himself a former Charlton player, was manager of the club at the time.

Carl spent several seasons with the Brickies and scored for them in an FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round tie at Margate on 13.9.80, the match finished 1-1. During the 1981/82 campaign Carl had a short spell at Dartford but returned to Sittingbourne before the end of the season. He then joined Dartford on a permanent basis in the summer of 1982.

Carl scored 14 goals in 33 appearances (eight as sub) for the Darts before joining Crawley in March 1983. It was initially a loan deal but quickly became a permanent move. He scored twice from ten outings for the Sussex club before the end of 1982/83.

Carl rejoined Sittingbourne for the 1983/84 campaign and then had a short spell with Bromley early in the 1984/85 season where he scored five goals in 16 appearances (seven as sub) before moving to Sheppey in December 1984.

In the summer of 1985 Carl joined Thanet United and he made his debut in an FA Cup tie against Chichester City at Hartsdown on 24.8.85. Thanet won the game 3-1. He struggled to win over the United fans and the Thanet Times' report for a 1-0 defeat at Burnham & Hillingdon on 14.9.85 said that Carl had "not exactly been the darling of the Hartsdown crowd". On 18.9.85 he scored his first goal for the club in a 2-1 win at Sheppey and on 21.9.85 Carl scored what the Adscene newspaper called an "excellent solo goal" as United trounced Dorchester 5-0 at Hartsdown. He cut in from the left and slid a low drive into the far corner of the net. Carl went on to score a total of four goals in 39 appearances before being released in March 1986. His last appearance came in a 3-2 defeat at home to Ashford on 15.3.86 and the Thanet Times said that Carl "never created much impact" and was "certainly not the most popular with the fans".

After leaving Hartsdown Park Carl joined Whitstable and made a few Kent League appearances for them before the end of the 1985/86 campaign.

During the 1987/88 season Carl played for Faversham and in the summer of 1988 he moved on to Chatham. He then returned to Sheppey for the 1989/90 campaign and scored for their reserves in a 3-0 win over Margate's second string on 2.9.89.

Carl linked up with Tonbridge for 1990/91 and made 21 appearances for the Angels during the season without scoring. During the 1991/92 campaign Carl made a further 18 appearances (ten as sub) without scoring and by that time he was Tonbridge's player-coach. He left the Angels in the summer of 1992 and rejoined Sittingbourne as player-coach.

Carl went on to become Sittingbourne's Youth Development Officer, a position he held during the 1994/95 season, and he then had a spell as Director of Football at Dover during 1995/96.

During his time at Crabble Carl made the final appearance of his career when he played in an Eastern Floodlight Cup tie at home to Ashford on 28.2.96, a game that Dover lost 4-0.

In the summer of 1998 Carl became manager of Chatham but he left the club in January 1999 to join Charlton as a full-time coach, he'd been coaching there on a part-time basis since 1996 and had also worked in the USA.

By 2000 Carl had become Charlton's Senior Academy Youth Coach and at that time the Richmond & Twickenham Times ran a feature on him, saying that he had "enjoyed a meteoric rise" through the Charlton coaching ranks. Carl agreed and said "it did happen very quickly for me" - he was still only 39 at the time.

By 2002/03 Carl was Charlton's Youth Team Coach, a position he still held during the 2004/05 season.

In 2007 Carl joined Arsenal as a youth coach with overall responsibility for the Gunners' sides from the Under-12's downwards.
