Ginger-haired, attack-minded player born in Folkestone who started his career with Hythe Town during the 1982/83 season at a time when his brother Mark was a full England international playing in the 1st Division for Norwich.

Clive moved on to Canterbury during the 1985/86 campaign and made 20 Southern League appearances, scoring three goals, before joining Folkestone in the summer of 1986.

He left Folkestone in October 1987 as part of a mass walk-out when the club decided to ban their players from turning out in Sunday football.

After leaving Folkestone Clive joined Herne Bay before returning to Canterbury in February 1988.

He went on to make 22 more Southern League appearances for City and scored twice before signing for Thanet United in August 1988.

Clive made his debut in a 1-1 draw at Hastings on 23.8.88 and the Isle of Thanet Gazette said that he was "especially prominent in the first half" on the right wing. On 15.10.88 Clive was one of four United players who caused the kick off for a game at Erith & Belvedere to be delayed by 15 minutes due to the car they were travelling to the match in breaking down. Gary Collins, Terry Collins and Pat Hilton were the others. On 29.10.88 Clive scored his first goal in a 2-2 draw at Ruislip, slotting home a penalty. He also put away a spot kick in United's next game - a 2-1 defeat at home to Trowbridge on 5.11.88. Clive was praised for his "lively work" by the Thanet Times. On 12.11.88 he scored with a first-time shot from 25 yards as United crashed 6-2 at Tonbridge and in the return game at Hartsdown on 17.12.88 he scored again, this time with a low angled drive after cutting in from the left and holding off two challenges. The Thanet Times said that Clive was "always a threat" during the match. He continued to be a regular in the United side during the months that followed, playing either as an out-and-out winger or in a more conventional midfield role.

Clive started 1989 in the worst possible fashion when he was sent off in a 1-0 defeat at home to Folkestone on 2.1.89. He kicked out at a grounded opponent with the referee in close attendance and the Thanet Times said it was "a woeful foul". The paper said that Clive's actions had left "a massive black mark" on his record and United's player-manager Garry Aldous fined him two weeks' wages. Clive made his last appearance for Thanet in a 5-2 defeat at Salisbury on 18.2.89. He and Terry Collins were then involved in an argument with Aldous before United's home game against Corinthian on 28.2.89 and neither played for the club again. Aldous told the Thanet Times "neither of them has contacted me since and I can only assume they have finished with us". Clive had made 31 appearances (one as sub) during 1988/89 and scored five goals, three of them from the penalty spot.

In the summer of 1989 Clive rejoined Canterbury and made six Southern League appearances before being released in December 1989. He joined Faversham and then briefly returned to Herne Bay before linking up with Kent County League outfit Folkestone Invicta early in the 1990/91 campaign. At the time they were a separate club to Folkestone Town of the Southern League.

Clive stayed with Invicta for the 1991/92 season, by which time they were the only senior club in Folkestone and were playing in the Kent League having taken over Cheriton Road following the demise of Folkestone Town.

In April 1994 Clive scored a hat-trick for Invicta in a 7-1 win at Kent Police and his stay at the club lasted until the summer of 1996 when he linked up with Hythe United.

Clive was Hythe's 'Player of the Year' for 1996/97 and made his last appearances for the club during the 1998/99 season before retiring.
