Birmingham-born defender who attended the Marlowe Academy in Ramsgate and played for Kent during his time at the school as well as having success as a 400 metre runner.

Courtney started his senior football career with Ramsgate before joining Margate in July 2010 at a time when his older brother Curtis had established himself in the first team.

Courtney became a regular in the reserves and on 12.10.10 he made his senior debut at centre-back as Margate lost 5-2 to Thamesmead in an Isthmian League Cup tie at Hartsdown Park. He was only 16 at the time.

Courtney also played in a 2-0 home defeat against Bromley in the Kent Senior Cup on 2.11.10 and the Isle of Thanet Gazette described him as "a big prospect". He then returned to the reserves for the remainder of 2010/11.

Courtney won Margate's 'Young Player of the Year' award for the season but in the summer of 2011 he was part of a mass exodus of reserve team players from the club who all joined Ramsgate.

Courtney's second spell with the Rams saw him play regularly for their reserves for much of the 2011/12 campaign but he finished the season with Whitstable where he played in the Under-18's.

In the summer of 2012 Courtney started a course at Manchester Metropolitan University but still played in the Thanet Sunday Football League when he could.
