5' 7" tall defender born in Basildon who started his career as an apprentice at Southend. Danny progressed through the Shrimpers youth ranks and made his first team debut as an 80th minute substitute in a 1-1 draw at Carlisle in Division 3 (later League Two) on 2.10.99. He was only 17 at the time and Southend's manager Alan Little said "To have a player as young as Kerrigan playing in our first-team is a tremendous boost. He certainly didn't look out of place when I put him on at Carlisle. He is a natural left-sided player who can operate either in midfield or as a wing-back."

Danny made four more sub appearances before making his full debut in a 1-0 home defeat against Cheltenham in the Football League Trophy on 7.12.99 but he didn't feature in Southend's first team again before the end of the 1999/00 season.

After spending the whole of 2000/01 in the reserves Danny finally got another chance in the Shrimpers' senior side early in the 2001/02 campaign. He made his first appearance as a sub in a 2-0 defeat at Oxford in Division 3 on 22.9.01 and then started in midfield as Southend beat visitors Carlisle 3-2 on 25.9.01. He went on to make ten more appearances (five as sub) before being released at the end of the season.

In the summer of 2002 Danny signed for Isthmian League Premier Division club Billericay and made 35 league appearances without scoring before moving on to Grays at the end of March 2003.

He played eight times for Grays in the Premier Division during the closing weeks of the 2002/03 campaign and Danny then featured in five Isthmian League games at the start of 2003/04.

At the start of September 2003 he was transferred to Hornchurch for a small fee and Danny made his debut for the Urchins in a 1-1 draw at Heybridge on 2.9.03. Unfortunately he wasn't actually eligible to play in the match and Hornchurch were subsequently docked the point they'd won as a result. Danny went on to make a total of 32 Premier Division appearances (one as sub) for the Urchins during the remainder of the 2003/04 season.

He rejoined Billericay during the 2004/05 campaign and Danny stayed with the club until the end of the 2007/08 campaign when he was released having made over 200 career appearances for Ricay.

In July 2008 Danny signed for Isthmian League Premier Division outfit Heybridge and their manager Brian Statham said "He's an important signing for us and I'm pleased to get a player of his quality and experience on board with us." On 30.8.08 Danny played in a 2-1 defeat at Margate and after making only six league appearances for Heybridge he moved on to Wivenhoe early in September 2008.

Danny's first outing for the Eastern Counties League Premier Division club was in a 5-2 home win over Norwich United on 6.9.08 and he played twice more before joining Margate later in September 2008.

He made his debut at left-back in a 1-0 win at Ashford (Middlesex) on 20.9.08 and the Thanet Times said Danny "did very well". He was a fixture in the number three shirt for the next few weeks and in its report on a 1-0 defeat against Hendon in an FA Trophy tie at Hartsdown Park on 18.10.08 the Thanet Times described Danny as being "a real solid player" and said he was "a real find". He'd played in ten consecutive matches before being stretchered off shortly before half-time in a 2-1 win at Boreham Wood on 11.11.08. It turned out that Danny had suffered serious knee ligament damage and he never played for Margate again.

Danny missed the remainder of the 2008/09 season before joining Canvey Island in the summer of 2009 but he was stretchered off with a cruciate ligament injury in a friendly against Chelmsford in July 2009 and didn't play at all during the 2009/10 campaign as a result.

He finally returned to action towards the end of 2010 but Danny only made five Premier Division appearances for Canvey (four as sub) before the end of the 2010/11 season. During the first half of 2011/12 he played seven times (three as sub) in the league without scoring and then in January 2012 Danny joined Isthmian League Division 1 North outfit Thamesmead.

He was a fixture in the Thamesmead side for the remainder of the 2011/12 campaign and scored twice from 17 league outings. Danny also spent the 2012/13 season with the club and made 36 league appearances (three as sub) without scoring as they won promotion to the Isthmian League Premier Division before retiring following a cartilage operation in July 2013. In November 2013 Danny explained "Obviously knowing my own body I can feel my knee not feeling the same and thought the best and only option would be to retire to prevent permanent damage."
