Talented, locally-born diminutive player blessed with great pace who played for the Kent Youth team and various Thanet junior clubs as a youngster. David first played for Margate's reserves during the 1962/63 season, scoring twice in eight games for them.

He became a regular in the second X1 during the 1963/64 campaign, making 24 appearances and scoring five times. David also played three times for the first team during the season, making his debut on 9.3.64 in a Kent Floodlight Cup tie at home to Dover. He performed well and the local press thought that David should have been given a run in the side but that didn't materialise, possibly because he was only 18 at the time.

During the 1964/65 season David made a further 13 appearances and scored once, his first for the club. The goal was a clever lob in a 6-1 win over Dartford at Hartsdown on 26.4.65. He enjoyed a run of games on the left wing towards the end of the season and compared favourably to the likes of Chick Hughes and David Hills who'd also played there during the campaign.

The 1965/66 season started well for David as he was selected for the opening game of the campaign - a Southern League match at Guildford on 21.8.65. He scored in a 2-2 draw and put in a good display but soon found himself out of favour once more. David only made eight sporadic appearances during the season and scored twice.

In June 1966 he took part in Margate's tour of West Germany and the 1966/67 campaign was a better one for David. He made 36 appearances and the local press said that he was "much improved". He scored six goals, the best of them an excellent volley in a 6-0 win over Deal on 10.10.66, and turned in many impressive performances on the right wing as Margate won promotion from the Southern League Division One by finishing as runners-up.

During the 1967/68 season David made a further 48 appearances (two as a substitute) to take his total for the club past 100 and he scored 15 times. His accurate crosses also created many goals for team-mates. On 6.4.68 David featured in the 1st Leg of the Southern League Cup Final - a 1-1 draw with Ramsgate at Hartsdown Park - and he then took part in the 2nd Leg at Southwood on 13.4.68 which finished 0-0.

David was often used as a substitute during the 1968/69 campaign, mainly due to the form of Phil Amato on the right wing, but still scored 14 goals in a total of 36 appearances (eight as sub). David turned in many impressive displays and finished the season by scoring in both legs of the Kent Floodlight Cup Final against Maidstone. The first game was a 1-1 draw on 20.5.69 and in the second on 24.5.69 two goals from David helped Margate win 3-1 at Hartsdown Park to claim the trophy.

He continued to be a popular figure with Margate fans during the 1969/70 campaign but only made 14 first team appearances, four of them as a substitute. David scored five goals, including a hat-trick in a 3-0 win over King's Lynn at Hartsdown Park on 27.9.69. It was his first Southern League appearance of the season. On 15.11.69 David was in the Margate side that were thrashed 7-2 by visitors Aldershot in the FA Cup 1st Round.

He played more regularly during the 1970/71 campaign, making 33 appearances (three as sub) and scoring ten times. David played on the right wing early in the season but generally played on the left after the arrival of John Baber. He turned in some performances that the local paper described as "encouraging" and continued to display his usual trickery. During a 0-0 draw at Gloucester on 28.11.70 David was said to be "constantly menacing".

During 1971/72 David made 26 appearances, five of them as a substitute, to go past 200 for the club and scored twice. As ever, he was in and out of the side and played on both wings during the campaign. On 20.11.71 he featured in Margate's infamous 11-0 defeat at Bournemouth & Boscombe in the FA Cup 1st Round.

At the end of the season David was released after more than nine years with the club and the Isle of Thanet Gazette praised him for being "an exceptional clubman". The paper also said that David had "always been extremely popular with the terracers" and in recognition of his service to Margate a collection was organised for him during a home match in the 1972/73 season, a campaign that David spent with Brett Sports.

He joined Snowdown for the 1973/74 season before moving on to Herne Bay for 1974/75. David was still with the club during the 1975/76 campaign.

His next move took him to Deal where he played under Terry Morris during 1976/77 and David was known as 'Jinky Jarman' during his time there.

He later dropped into local amateur football and was still playing locally during the 1981/82 season.

David then made a surprise return to senior football during the 1982/83 campaign when he had a spell with Ramsgate aged 37.

He was still living in Margate in 2014 and at that time David's grandson Kyle was part of Margate FC's academy.

On 12.4.14 David was one of the many former Margate players who attended the club's 'Legends Day' at Hartsdown Park.
