Hard-working, Penge-born player who started his career as an apprentice at Brighton where he progressed from the Seagulls' junior side up to the reserves. David scored five times from nine outings for them during the 1962/63 season and also played once for Brighton's first team in a County Cup tie.

During the 1963/64 campaign he was the reserve team's leading scorer with nine goals from 21 outings and David again played once for the senior side in a County Cup tie. 1964/65 saw him score 11 goals from 27 reserve team appearances and that tally made David their joint leading marksman.

He finally made his full first team debut on 21.9.65 and scored as Brighton lost 2-1 at Ipswich in a League Cup tie. David then made his Football League bow as Brighton drew 2-2 with visitors Millwall on 25.9.65 and he played once more for the senior side before the end of the 1965/66 season. He also scored seven goals from 17 reserve team outings.

Having been released by Brighton David signed for Southern League outfit Chelmsford in the summer of 1966 but his spell with the Essex club was brief.

In October 1966 David joined Margate, initially on a month's trial, having been recommended to the club by his former Chelmsford team-mate Peter Gillott who was Margate's captain at the time.

Playing as a striker, David made an immediate impact by scoring twice on his debut, a 4-0 win over Dunstable at Hartsdown Park on 29.10.66. His first goal came with just seven minutes gone. A week later, on 5.11.66, David scored a brilliant solo goal in a 3-0 win at Canterbury, beating three players before calmly walking the ball into the net. He then scored a hat-trick in an 8-0 win over Tunbridge Wells at Hartsdown Park on 12.11.66. That gave David a record of six goals in his first four games - a great start to his spell with Margate. His transfer soon became permanent and David went on to make a total of 48 appearances (one as a substitute) during the remainder of 1966/67 as Margate won promotion from the Southern League Division One by finishing as runners-up. He scored 16 goals, including another great solo effort in a 2-1 win at Rugby on 9.5.67, despite spending much of the season playing in midfield. However David was often 'barracked' by sections of the Margate crowd.

During the early part of the 1967/68 season David struggled to gain a regular place in the first team but on 6.1.68 he played as Margate lost 4-0 at home to Peterborough in the 2nd Round of the FA Cup. David had scored twice from 18 appearances (two as a substitute) when he was transferred to Dartford in February 1968.

He joined the Darts in a straight swap for winger Chris Clarke and went on to score three times in 19 appearances before leaving the club at the end of the campaign.

In 2010 David was living in Bournemouth.
