Hard-tackling defender born in Eccleston who started his senior career with Blackburn, signing for them in May 1958, but didn't make the first team there.

In July 1963 David moved on to Rochdale and he went on to make nine senior appearances for them during 1963/64. He then joined Margate in the summer of 1964.

David began the 1964/65 season as the club's first-choice right-back in preference to Bill Parry but suffered a knee injury on his debut in a game against Bath at Hartsdown on 22.8.64. David was out for a couple of months as a result but he returned to the first team in October 1964 and even drove the team coach to Rugby and back on 24.10.64 due to the regular coach driver being on holiday. However a few weeks later he suffered a further knee injury and had to undergo a cartilage operation which sidelined him until January 1965. David recovered and played a handful of games before the end of the season although he also fractured a bone in his face during a game against Dartford on 15.2.65.

In the summer of 1965 he was released having made just 14 appearances in an injury-jinxed season.

David then returned to the Rochdale area.
