Eric made his debut on 16.11.46 and scored a solo goal as Margate thrashed Snowdown 5-1 in a Kent League match at Hartsdown Park. He then made four further appearances without scoring before leaving the club due to his army unit being posted overseas.

Eric later returned to Hartsdown and played for the reserves during the first half of the 1950/51 season, mainly as a centre-back, before departing again in January 1951 due to his unit being posted overseas once more. A piece in the programme for his last reserve match said "A better club man never put on football boots and a cleaner player never kicked a ball. The sports world has all too few such men".
