6' 4" tall defender born in Barking who had a spell at Charlton as a junior before joining Brighton. Gareth played for the Seagulls' youth team alongside future Margate player Roy Hales during the 1987/88 and 1988/89 seasons and then moved to Maidstone.

In the summer of 1990 Gareth signed for Margate and made his debut on the opening day of the 1990/91 season in a 2-2 draw at Witney. He missed Margate's next match but returned for a 2-2 draw with Burnham at Hartsdown Park on 25.8.90. Gareth then fell out of favour and in October 1990 he was loaned to Erith & Belvedere, playing for them as they drew 2-2 at home to Margate in a Southern League Cup tie on 16.10.90. He also played in the return leg at Hartsdown on 30.10.90 and incurred the wrath of the Isle of Thanet Gazette as the Deres went down 4-3. The paper said that Gareth was "hapless" and made "two woeful errors...(that) resulted in crucial goals". One of the mistakes was a weak headed back-pass that led to Margate's Paul Underwood finding the net. Gareth stayed with the Deres until December 1990 when he returned to Hartsdown Park after breaking his nose in the last game of his loan spell at Yate. He then made five appearances for Margate's reserves, scoring twice in the process, but never played for the first team again and left the club in February 1991.

Gareth later played for Barking, joining them for the 1992/93 season and making nine appearances (one as sub) without scoring before leaving the club.

He moved to Hornchurch for the 1993/94 campaign.
