Tall, burly Dover-born centre-forward who began his senior career with Ramsgate during the 1980/81 season. Gary later joined Thanet United, linking up with the club for the 1986/87 campaign.

He made a good impression in United's reserve side and scored a hat-trick for them in a 5-1 win over Folkestone in September 1986. Gary had already scored nine goals for the second string when he made his first team debut in an FA Trophy tie against Dover at Hartsdown Park on 4.10.86. He came on as a substitute in a 1-1 draw.

Gary then returned to the reserves until being called up for Thanet's home game against Waterlooville on 22.11.86. He marked his full debut with a goal in a 2-1 victory, controlling the ball on his thigh before turning to fire home from close range. United manager John Wickens said that Gary was "a natural goal poacher with a good instinct and a deadly finish inside the box" and added "he looks very promising."

Gary scored again in a 1-1 draw with Dover in a Southern League Cup tie at Hartsdown Park on 9.12.86 and he'd made a total of seven appearances (two as sub) by the end of 1986, the last of them in a 2-1 defeat at Corinthian on 27.12.86.

Early in 1987 Gary joined Ramsgate and the Rams' manager Lester Smith said "I am sure he will be a good signing for the future."

Gary moved on to Kent Police for the 1987/88 campaign and then made a brief return to Hartsdown Park during 1989/90. He scored twice in six games for Margate's reserves in March and April 1990 before rejoining Ramsgate.

Gary was the Rams leading scorer for the 1991/92 season and also spent the 1992/93 campaign at Southwood before leaving the club and moving to the Middle East.

He later lived in South America for a period and then spent nine years in Spain before returning to Thanet. Gary was living in Margate in 2012.

His uncle Dennis Hammond served on Dover's board for over 40 years and another relative of Gary's also played for Dover.
