Canterbury-born player who started his career with Dover, playing for their youth team during the 1978/79 campaign. Gary stayed with the club for over five years and played for Dover's first team during the 1982/83, 1983/84 and 1984/85 seasons.

Towards the end of 1984 Gary moved on to Canterbury but played just once before linking up with Deal for the 1985/86 campaign.

Gary stayed with Deal until December 1986 when he signed for Thanet United. He made his debut on 9.12.86 in a 1-1 draw with Dover in a Southern League Cup tie at Hartsdown Park and had a solid game in the heart of the United defence. He went on to make a total of 18 appearances (two as sub) before the end of the 1986/87 season and played as a striker in two of those games. Gary scored his only goal in a 4-0 win over Ramsgate in the inaugural Isle of Thanet Gazette Cup match at Hartsdown on 13.4.87.

During the early months of the 1987/88 campaign Gary was mostly used as a striker and on 12.9.87 he scored with two headers in a 3-1 win at Merstham in the FA Cup. He also scored twice as Thanet beat Chatham 8-0 at Hartsdown on 1.12.87 and by that time Gary had moved into midfield. Towards the end of 1987 he was in and out of the side and after a 1-0 defeat at Baldock on 16.1.88 Gary spent almost three months out of the first team picture altogether. This was mainly due to a foot injury although there were times when he was fit but only chosen for the reserves. On 6.4.88 Gary finally returned to the senior side when he played up front in a 1-1 draw at Burnham but he only featured twice more as a substitute before the end of the season. When he came on in a 3-1 defeat at Hastings on 2.5.88 it was Gary's last game in a Thanet shirt. He was released in the summer of 1988 having scored six goals in 31 appearances (four as sub). He'd also made eight appearances in the reserves, scoring once, and their manager Mick Busby praised Gary's attitude although it was later suggested that he'd failed to turn up for some games towards the end of the 1987/88 campaign.

Gary joined Canterbury for 1988/89 and made 58 Southern League appearances, scoring four goals, before moving to Ramsgate in October 1990. In November 1990 he was sent off in the Rams' 4-1 win at Crockenhill.

Gary moved to Folkestone Invicta in the summer of 1991 and spent four years there before rejoining Deal for 1995/96.

By the time he left Deal to return to Canterbury in the summer of 1997 Gary had taken his total career appearances for the club to 115.

After spending the 1997/98 season with Canterbury Gary joined Whitstable for 1998/99. He made his debut for the Oystermen on 15.8.98 and was sent off in his fourth game for club, a 2-1 home win over Herne Bay on 31.8.98. Towards the end of the campaign he moved on to Hythe United.

Gary went on to stay at Hythe for over five years and during the 2002/03 season, by which time they were known as Hythe Town, he had a spell as the club's player-manager before reverting to a purely playing role for 2003/04.

In September 2004 he went back to Deal once again, around the time of his 42nd birthday. By the start of 2007/08 Gary was approaching 150 first team appearances for Deal and during the 2007/08 campaign he made 28 appearances (two as sub) for the reserves aged 45.

He was player-manager of Deal's reserve side during 2008/09 and in October 2008 Gary was sent off for them in a game against Dover Reserves. He was 46 by then.

During the 2009/10 season Gary was assistant manager of Deal's reserves and still playing for them. He also turned out for a Dover veterans side during the campaign.

Gary was still player-manager of Deal's reserve side at the start of 2011/12 and by then his son Jordan was playing for Deal's first team. At that time Gary was living in Newington near Folkestone and running his own company 'Gary Miller Gas Services Limited'.

Early in 2012 Gary became Canterbury City's assistant manager and Jordan followed him to the club. City's manager at the time was former Margate player Paul Murray.

In April 2012 Gary left City after a brief spell as caretaker manager following Murray's departure.
