Fulham-born brother of Margate players Derek and Ted Wells who played for Margate's reserves and recovered from a double fracture of his leg during 1947/48 to make a one-off first team appearance at the end of the season. Gerry played in a 3-1 defeat at Maidstone in the Kent League on 30.4.48.

Gerry went on to play local football for many years and was with Birchington of the Kent Amateur League for a period from at least 1952/53 through to the 1960/61 season.

He also served as Chairman of the Thanet Premier Sunday League for 20 years and the league's trophy for the best club secretary of the season was known as the Gerry Wells Administration Cup.

He also boxed for Ramsgate Amateur Boxing Club and worked as a manager at Klingers clothing factory in Thanet before moving on to Bass Leisure in Ramsgate.

Gerry later moved to Eastbourne and died there on 19.11.73 aged only 48.

His nephew Steve Wells had a lengthy stint as Margate's Press Officer that ended in 2013.
