Defender who played for Medway Colts as a schoolboy before joining Gillingham in August 1984. Ivan was virtually ever-present in the Gills' youth team for three seasons after making his debut aged 15 and in July 1987 he was signed as a professional. He made his first team debut during the 1987/88 campaign and in the summer of 1990 Ivan played for Gillingham in a friendly at Margate. After making 64 senior appearances (eight as sub) he was released by the Gills in the summer of 1991 along with future Margate players Michael Harle and Dave Jordan and all three players joined Sittingbourne for the 1991/92 season.

Ivan left the Brickies at the end of 1992/93 and in the summer of 1993 he appeared in friendlies for Dover before signing for Margate.

He made his debut in a 0-0 draw with Fareham at Hartsdown Park on 21.8.93, the opening day of the 1993/94 campaign, and the Thanet Times said he "proved a fine sweeper" behind centre-backs Billy Plews and player-manager Mark Weatherly. Ivan became a fixture in the Margate side from then on and was equally comfortable in either a sweeper or traditional centre-back role. The Thanet Times described him as "sturdy" in its report on a 2-0 home defeat against Baldock on 6.11.93 and the Isle of Thanet Gazette said Ivan was "outstanding" in a 2-0 win at Ashford on 16.11.93. In March 1994 the same paper said he had been "reliability personified" throughout the season but on 9.4.94 Ivan was sent off in a 4-1 defeat at Gravesend & Northfleet and missed three matches as a result of his suspension. He returned to the Margate side on 2.5.94 when he took over from Jason Fenton at left-back for the Kent Senior Cup Final against Dover at his old club Gillingham's Priestfield Stadium. It was a happy return as Margate took the trophy with a 2-1 victory. Ivan kept his place for the club's last two matches of 1993/94, wearing the number three shirt in each of them. He finished the season having made 49 appearances without scoring.

Ivan started the 1994/95 campaign in good form and the Isle of Thanet Gazette said he was "especially dominant" as a sweeper in a 1-0 over Wealdstone at Yeading on 24.8.94. The paper said he was a "commanding figure" during a 1-1 draw with Braintree at Hartsdown on 15.11.94 and Ivan only missed three matches before the end of 1994. The Thanet Times described his performance in a 2-1 home win over Burnham on 14.2.95 as "inspirational" and Ivan continued to be an important part of Margate's defence until April 1995. After playing in a 3-1 defeat at Tonbridge on 15.4.95 he left the club with seven games of 1994/95 still to play. Ivan had made 45 appearances without scoring and retired from senior football after his departure from Hartsdown Park.

In the early 2000's Ivan was running his own car showroom in Luton near Chatham.

In 2009 his son Matt (born in 1989) played for Great Britain and Ireland in golf's Walker Cup - the amateur equivalent of the Ryder Cup.
