Tough defender who played for Cray Valley Paper Mills in the South London Alliance and Kent County League before joining Kent League club Cray Wanderers. During his time there Joe played for the London FA representative side.

In the summer of 2002 he moved on to Bromley and Joe made 36 Isthmian League Division 1 South appearances (three as sub) during the 2002/03 campaign without scoring. However he did manage a goal as Bromley won 2-1 at Ilford in a London Senior Cup tie on 23.12.02. Joe won the club's 'Supporters' Player of the Year' and 'Players' Player of the Year' awards for the season.

During the first half of the 2003/04 campaign he made a further 17 Division 1 South appearances without scoring for Bromley but early in January 2004 Joe signed for Crawley where his uncle Francis Vines was manager.

After playing once for Crawley's reserves on 10.1.04 Joe was loaned to Lewes under a dual-registration agreement and he joined the Sussex club despite an attempt by Bromley to bring him back on loan.

Joe went on to make 14 appearances without scoring for Lewes in the Isthmian League Division 1 South before the end of the 2003/04 season and the club were promoted to the Conference South after beating Kingstonian 1-0 in the Play-Off Final.

In the summer of 2004 he signed a contract with Lewes and in March 2005 they loaned Joe to AFC Wimbledon of the Isthmian League Division 1. He made four league appearances (one as sub) without scoring for the Dons during the remainder of the 2004/05 campaign.

He went back to Bromley in the summer of 2005 and Joe scored once from 25 outings (two as sub) in the Isthmian League Premier Division during the 2005/06 season.

In June 2006 he signed for Conference South club Welling but Joe was released in September 2006.

At the start of October 2006 he joined Tooting & Mitcham where his younger brother Paul, a striker, was playing and Joe made 20 Division 1 South appearances (two as sub) and scored once as the club finished second in the league but lost in the Play-Off Final to Hastings.

In July 2007 Joe played in a friendly for Dover against Gillingham but although he was offered a deal by the Crabble outfit he opted to stay with Tooting & Mitcham. Joe went on to score once from 16 Division 1 South outings during an injury-hit 2007/08 season as the club again finished second before winning the Play-Off Final to gain promotion.

He then scored three times in 33 Premier Division appearances during 2008/09 and during the 2009/10 campaign Joe was Tooting's captain. On 7.11.09 he played as they lost 5-0 at League Two club Stockport in the FA Cup 1st Round and Joe finished the season having made a total of 35 league appearances (one as sub), scoring twice.

In the summer of 2010 he featured in friendlies for Bromley, Tonbridge Angels and Farnborough but Joe ended up starting the 2010/11 campaign with Division 1 South outfit Sittingbourne.

He only played twice for the Brickies before moving on to Maidstone and Joe immediately became their captain. He scored once from 17 Premier Division outings for the Stones before leaving the club in February 2011 after a disagreement with manager Andy Ford.

Joe then had a short spell back at his original club Cray Valley Paper Mills who were playing in the Kent County League before rejoining Cray in March 2011.

He scored once from six Premier Division appearances before the end of the 2010/11 season and Joe then scored once from 19 league outings (one as sub) for Cray during 2011/12. He stayed with the club for the first half of the 2012/13 campaign but in January 2013 Joe was sent off as Cray lost 5-1 at Thurrock and he didn't play again.

A few days after leaving Cray he signed for Kent League outfit Erith & Belvedere and Joe made his debut in a 2-0 win over Fisher at Dulwich on 12.1.13.

In February 2013 he joined Margate and at that time Joe was working in recruitment for an investment bank in London. He made his debut at centre-back in a 2-1 defeat at Wealdstone in the Isthmian League Premier Division on 16.2.13 and Margate's website said Joe "looked very steady in the middle of defence". He kept his place for a trip to Metropolitan Police on 20.2.13 but Joe was sent off after picking up two yellow cards as the home side won 1-0. Margate's website said he'd been the team's "best player on the night".

After missing a match due to suspension Joe returned in a 2-0 win over Leiston at Hartsdown Park on 26.2.13 and Margate's website again praised him, saying he "had another good game". He also played in a 0-0 draw with Hendon at Wembley FC on 2.3.13 but Joe then missed two matches altogether.

He was back in the side for a 1-1 draw at Whitehawk on 19.3.13 and Joe then started the next three games before going off injured 16 minutes into a home match against Thurrock on 29.3.13 that Margate went on to win 3-1. He missed four games before playing in a 2-1 defeat against Metropolitan Police on 13.4.13. That was Joe's last outing of the season and he finished the campaign having made a total of nine appearances without scoring.

He had an FA Level 2 coaching badge and before his time with Margate Joe had been involved with football-related advertising for the likes of Nike, T-Mobile, Lucozade and Tesco. He'd also done film work as a body double and extra. In addition Joe was heavily involved in The Amateur and Semi Professional Sportsperson's Union along with the likes of former Margate striker Che Stadhart.
