England schoolboy and youth international who was a native of the North East and played for Stakeford Juniors as a youngster.

John started his senior career with Blyth Spartans and was with them when they lost to Hull in an FA Cup 2nd Round tie during 1980/81.

He moved on to Ashington for the 1981/82 season and then went to university in Liverpool. John played for the university team and also captained the England Universities side in an 1987/88 tournament.

In 1989 John moved to Thanet to work as a doctor at the local hospital and he joined Margate for the 1989/90 campaign, quickly gaining the nickname 'Quincy'. He went on to make 23 appearances (five as sub) for the reserves during the season and scored five goals as they won the Kent League Division 2 title. John also made a one-off appearance for the first team, playing at right-back in a 3-0 win over Andover at Hartsdown in the Southern League on 7.10.89. He left the club during the early months of 1990.

In the summer of 1990 John returned to Hartsdown Park and made a further 22 appearances (one as sub) for Margate's reserves during 1990/91, scoring four goals. He was never called upon for the first team and left the club again at the end of the season.

John was also a good skier and swimmer, representing Northumberland at both sports.
