Locally-born player who made his first appearances in Margate's reserve team towards the end of the 1975/76 season. John was also playing for Margate Colts in the Thanet Premier Sunday League at that time.

In the summer of 1976 he appeared in some of Margate's pre-season friendlies and played twice (once as a substitute) during the opening weeks of the 1976/77 campaign. John made his debut on 24.8.76 when he played on the left wing in a Southern League Cup tie at Hastings that Margate lost 2-0 and at the time he was still a pupil at Dane Court School in Broadstairs. His other appearance was as a substitute in a 4-1 defeat at Telford on 30.8.76.

John also played for the reserves during the 1977/78 and 1978/79 seasons before dropping into local amateur football.

In 2009 he was still living locally and managing Westgate FC (who he'd founded as Nottingham Castle FC) in the Thanet Sunday Football League. At that time John was working for Mirror Group Newspapers (not as a journalist) and had been in the newspaper business since leaving school. He still turned out for Westgate occasionally during the 2009/10 season aged 50.

John continued to be involved in local amateur football during the 2013/14 campaign and still sometimes played when required.

His father Don played for Margate's reserves for a spell in the 1950's that included the 1955/56 campaign.
