5' 11" tall strong centre-forward born in Kensington, London who started his career with Millwall. John had an amazing first team debut for the Lions, scoring all four goals in a 4-1 win at Leyton Orient in October 1952. Three of his goals came in a four minute spell.

He went on to make a total of 166 senior appearances between 1952/53 and 1957/58 and John scored 78 goals during that time. His tally included a hat-trick as Millwall beat Margate 4-0 in an FA Cup 2nd Round tie at The Den on 8.12.56.

In June 1958 he joined Brighton for a fee of £2,250 and John made a further 45 first team appearances there before moving to Gillingham in February 1960.

He scored 26 goals in 58 senior appearances for the Gills before dropping into non-league football in the summer of 1961.

John linked up with Tunbridge Wells before having a spell at Ashford where he was club captain.

John joined Margate from Ashford in December 1962 and scored on his debut in a 3-1 win over Cheltenham at Hartsdown Park on 15.12.62. He went on to make 13 first team appearances during the remainder of the 1962/63 campaign and scored six times. However he was hampered by various injuries and at the end of the season he was released after Margate had won the Southern League Division One title.

John then rejoined Tunbridge Wells for the 1963/64 campaign before returning to his native Sussex in the summer of 1964.

He became player-coach at Southwick and John continued in the role until 1971. In later years he coached Brighton's youth team for many seasons and John was also the Seagulls' chief youth scout for Sussex.

In 2001 he was living in the Portslade area of Brighton.
