Versatile Nottingham-born player who had spells with Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest as a youth before moving on to Barnet. Paul was playing for the Bees' reserves by the 1988/89 season.

In September 1990 Paul joined Margate on loan and made his debut at left-back in a 2-1 home defeat against Gosport on 8.9.90. He then displayed his versatility by playing as a right-back, left winger, central midfielder and left-back again over the course of Margate's next six matches. On 13.10.90 Paul upset manager Colin Powell by arriving only five minutes before the kick off of an FA Cup tie at Peacehaven & Telscombe. He wasn't selected and didn't play again until 30.10.90 by which time Steve McRaye had replaced Powell. The match concerned was a Southern League Cup tie against Erith & Belvedere at Hartsdown Park and Margate won 4-3 with Paul getting his first goal for the club. A few days later he was recalled by Barnet who immediately loaned him to Dagenham.

After scoring once in four appearances in a month with the Daggers Paul returned to Margate for another loan spell and made his first appearance in a 1-1 draw with VS Rugby at Hartsdown on 1.12.90. From then on he was a fixture in the side for the remainder of the 1990/91 season, mostly playing in central midfield but also featuring as a full-back, winger and even as a striker on occasions. On 29.12.90 Paul scored what the Thanet Times called "a goal of rare quality" to secure a 1-0 win over Hythe at Hartsdown. He beat three players before planting a low drive just inside the post from the edge of the penalty area. By the end of the season he'd made 38 appearances (one as sub) and scored four times.

Paul missed the first two games of the 1991/92 campaign through injury but returned to play in the centre of Margate's defence in a 2-1 defeat at Baldock on 24.8.91. He featured regularly after that and usually played in midfield. On 9.11.91 Paul wore the number seven shirt in a 0-0 draw with Dunstable at Hartsdown and it turned out to be his last game for Margate. Later in November he left the club due to work commitments which restricted his availability. Paul had made 15 appearances (two as sub) without scoring during 1991/92.
