Dover-born younger brother of Paul Sykes who attended Archer's Court school in Dover and played for Dover's reserves during the 1995/96 season.

Peter joined Margate in the summer of 1997 and made his debut aged 18 on 29.7.97 when he wore the number eight shirt in a 3-1 win over Ramsgate at Hartsdown Park for the Link Music Cup. He made one more first team appearance as a substitute in a 2-0 home win over Baldock on 23.9.97, a game in which his brother Paul scored.

Peter then played for the reserves until breaking his leg in 4-0 defeat at Herne Bay on 4.11.97. The injury ended his senior football career.

Following his brother Paul's tragic death from a heart defect in 2005 Peter played in the Syko Challenge game at Hartsdown Park on 30.4.06 and later ran several London Marathons in aid of Cardiac Risk in the Young.

He was working as a postman in the Dover area in 2008.
