Locally-born player who progressed through Thanet United's youth system to the reserves and made his debut for them in a 2-2 draw with Folkestone Reserves at Hartsdown Park on 23.11.85.

Russ continued playing for United's reserves for the next couple of seasons and made 30 appearances for them during 1987/88.

He stayed with the club for the 1988/89 campaign and made a further 22 appearances for the reserves, scoring once. Russ also broke into the first team and made his debut at right-back as Thanet beat Hitchin 1-0 in an FA Trophy tie at Hartsdown Park on 24.9.88. Russ may not have been registered to play as his appearance was credited to 'Peter Gaze' in subsequent Thanet match programmes. His next appearance came in a 2-1 home defeat against Trowbridge on 5.11.88 and the Thanet Times said Russ "did well". He kept his place for United's next two games and then had a run of five games in the side, all at right-back, towards the end of 1988. The Isle of Thanet Gazette said that Russ showed "latent promise". He made a few more sporadic appearances for the first team in the early months of 1989 and the Thanet Times said that Russ "took the eye with some dogged work" during a 4-0 defeat at home to Andover on 21.1.89. It turned out to be his last start for United and Russ made his final appearance when he came on as a substitute in a 2-0 defeat against Baldock at Hartsdown on 15.4.89. That took his overall tally to 15 appearances (four as sub) without scoring.

Russ stayed at Hartsdown for the start of the 1989/90 season and made nine appearances (one as sub) for Margate's reserves before joining Ramsgate in October 1989.

He spent a couple of years at Southwood, playing almost exclusively for the Rams' reserves, until moving to Herne Bay for the start of the 1991/92 season. Russ left the club a few weeks later after being part of Bay's reserve team that lost 11-1 to Hastings.

He joined Canterbury for the 1992/93 campaign and progressed from the reserves to City's first team towards the end of the season. Russ made eight further appearances (five as sub) there during the early part of 1993/94 but left the club before Christmas 1993.

He rejoined Margate in the summer of 1994 and played twice for the reserves before going back to Canterbury a few weeks into the 1994/95 season.

Russ was still living in Margate during the early 2000's and at that time he was working as a personal trainer and operations manager at a Health and Fitness Club in Canterbury.

During the 2005/06 season Russ was playing local football for Westgate.
