He was playing locally for Westcliff in the Thanet League and Lloyds Bank in the Thanet Works League when Thanet United's reserve team manager Peter Donnelly asked him to join the club for the 1981/82 campaign. Simon stayed with United for the 1983/84 season but spent the entire campaign in the reserves before dropping back into local football.

In 1988 he left the Thanet area and moved to Heathfield in East Sussex. Simon carried on playing Saturday / Sunday football in local leagues there until retiring in 1995.

In 2011 Simon was still living in Heathfield and his cricket career was still going strong. At that time he was in charge of a Crawley-based branch of the Swedish bank Handelsbanken and had worked in the banking industry for over 35 years by then.

Simon's sister was once married to Thanet United player Clive Haywood.
