Left-sided Hertfordshire-born midfielder who started his senior career with Hoddesdon of the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division after finishing a degree course at university. Spencer played for them during the 1997/98 and 1998/99 campaigns before joining Arlesey in the summer of 1999.

Arlesey won the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division during 1999/00 and at the end of the season Spencer stepped up to Isthmian League football when he signed for Premier Division club St.Albans.

He made his debut in a 1-1 draw at Carshalton on 19.8.00 and on 21.11.00 Spencer got his first goal for St.Albans in a 6-0 win at Royston in the Hertfordshire Senior Cup. He was sent off in a 2-1 defeat at Basingstoke on 3.3.01 and finished the 2000/01 campaign having scored four times in a total of 44 appearances (five as sub).

In the summer of 2001 Spencer played in some friendlies for Luton and in one of them he scored against St.Albans who he was still registered with at the time.

He ended up starting the 2001/02 season with Isthmian League Premier Division club Harrow and Spencer scored three goals from ten league appearances there (one as sub) before joining Borough's Premier Division rivals Canvey Island in November 2001.

On 15.1.02 Spencer scored Canvey's quickest-ever hat-trick when he bagged three goals in as many minutes during a 6-1 home win over Southend Manor in the Essex Senior Cup and he finished 2001/02 having scored another four goals from 21 league outings (seven as sub).

Spencer stayed with Canvey for the 2002/03 campaign but missed most of the season after suffering a serious allergic reaction to an insect bite on his ankle. He only made seven league appearances (four as sub) and scored once before being released.

Spencer didn't play anywhere during 2003/04 but returned to football in the summer of 2004 when he started a second stint at St.Albans. He played three times during the opening weeks of the 2004/05 campaign before joining Bishop's Stortford on loan in September 2004.

Spencer made two substitute appearances for Stortford before going back to St.Albans in October 2004 and in November 2004 he moved to Boreham Wood.

Spencer spent the remainder of the 2004/05 season playing for the Wood in the Southern League Eastern Division and then joined Leyton of the Isthmian League Premier Division in July 2005.

He made 30 league appearances (five as sub) and scored three goals for Leyton during 2005/06 before joining Margate at the end of March 2006.

Spencer turned out to be manager Chris Kinnear's last signing before he was sacked and he made his debut as a substitute in a 2-1 defeat against Heybridge in the Isthmian League Premier Division at Hartsdown Park on 1.4.06. Spencer's next appearance came in a 1-0 win at Hampton & Richmond on 8.4.06 and he played from the start in the number eleven shirt. He kept his place for the last four matches of the season and in its report on a 2-0 win at his old club Leyton on 22.4.06 the Thanet Times said Spencer's left foot looked "pretty handy".

On 29.4.06 he scored in a 4-2 home win over Hendon and that was Spencer's final outing for Margate. He was then released having made a total of six appearances (one as sub).

In the summer of 2006 Spencer signed for Chelmsford and went on to score three goals from 22 Isthmian League Premier Division appearances (one as sub) during the 2006/07 campaign. He then made 41 appearances (23 as sub) and scored twice during 2007/08 as Chelmsford won the league title. Spencer was eventually released at the end of the 2008/09 season.

In June 2009 he joined Welling but Spencer left the Conference South club early in August 2009 and linked up with Isthmian League Premier Division outfit Billericay in time for the start of the 2009/10 campaign proper.

He made seven league appearances (one as sub) for Ricay before being released in October 2009 and Spencer then dropped down to Division 1 North to join Maldon in November 2009.

He only played once for Maldon and in February 2010 Spencer signed for Harlow, also of the Isthmian League Division 1 North, at the same time as former Margate player Lee Protheroe. Spencer made 15 league appearances without scoring before the end of the 2009/10 season and then dropped out of senior football.

He resurfaced in September 2012 when he signed for Division 1 North club Ware and Spencer went on to score four times from 19 league outings (four as sub) before the end of the 2012/13 campaign. He stayed with the club for the start of the 2013/14 season too.

Spencer also did some scouting for Brentford during 2013/14 and in the summer of 2014 he became player-assistant manager of Isthmian League Division One North club Harlow where he'd played a few years before.
