Aggressive 5' 11" tall Tooting-born player who started his career as a striker. Steve's first senior club was Malden Vale and during the 1993/94 season he was the Isthmian League Division 2 outfit's top scorer aged only 18.

He followed Vale's manager Mick Browne to Hendon for the 1994/95 campaign and Steve scored on his debut as Hendon drew 2-2 at Slough in an Isthmian League Premier Division game on 13.8.94. He went on to make 43 appearances during the season and finished with a tally of eight goals as he began to play regularly as a midfielder. Steve then scored twice from 18 outings during the first half of the 1995/96 campaign before moving on to Molesey in December 1995.

He played under Mick Browne again at Molesey and in the summer of 1996 Steve signed for Dulwich Hamlet, following Browne to the club.

Steve scored eight goals from 50 appearances for Hamlet during 1996/97 and won the 'Supporters Player of the Year' award for the season. He then made 35 Isthmian League Premier Division appearances (one as sub) for Dulwich during the 1997/98 campaign, scoring twice, and featured in another 22 league games during the first half of 1998/99 before joining Conference club Farnborough in January 1999.

Steve spent the remainder of the campaign at Farnborough as they were relegated and in the summer of 1999 he moved on to Hayes.

Steve spent two seasons with Hayes who were in the Conference at the time and made a total of 96 appearances (four as sub) for the club, scoring five goals up to the end of the 2000/01 campaign.

In the summer of 2001 Steve joined Isthmian League Premier Division outfit Kingstonian and made his debut as the K's lost 1-0 at home to Gravesend & Northfleet on 18.8.01. Later in August 2001 he was fined by manager Bill Williams after becoming embroiled in an argument with supporters during a match at Maidenhead. Steve made a total of seven appearances (two as sub) without scoring for Kingstonian before leaving the club to join Gravesend & Northfleet at the start of October 2001.

He helped the Fleet to win the Isthmian League Premier Division title during 2001/02 but Steve then missed most of the 2002/03 Conference campaign after contracting tuberculosis. He became club captain for the 2003/04 season and early in 2005 Steve had a spell as joint player-caretaker-manager alongside Paul McCarthy in the period between Andy Ford's resignation and Liam Daish's appointment as Fleet boss. A knee injury forced Steve to miss most of the 2005/06 campaign but he returned to action towards the end of the season and on 4.4.06 he was sent off in a 3-1 home defeat against Grays. Steve played twice more to take his career record for Gravesend to 168 appearances (15 as sub) and he scored a total of nine goals. Steve was then released in May 2006 along with numerous other Fleet players as the club became full-time and he didn't want to give up his day job as a supplier of timber and building materials.

Shortly after leaving Gravesend Steve signed for Margate along with several of his former Fleet team-mates and in June 2006 he spoke to the Isle of Thanet Gazette about them joining the club "We're all 30 but if anyone thinks we're here for a final swansong I can assure them that isn't going to happen. We're at Margate to do a job, we've got the experience, we're professional and we know what it takes to win the Ryman League. A lot of people say it's a hard league to get out of and it was when we won it at Gravesend - we pipped Canvey on the last game. Ideally we're looking to win this league and push on - Margate should be in the Conference in my eyes."

Steve became captain and on 8.7.06 he scored with a diving header as Margate drew 1-1 with a Millwall X1 in his first outing for the club. A few days before the start of the new season player-manager Robin Trott spoke to the Isle of Thanet Gazette about Steve and said "A great player. He's your generator in midfield and will run through brick walls for me and the club, which is always nice. He'll score the odd goal from time to time."

Steve made his competitive debut in a 5-2 win at Worthing in the Isthmian League Premier Division on 19.8.06 and quickly made a good impression in the heart of Margate's midfield. On 26.8.06 he missed a 2-1 win over Slough at Hartsdown Park due to illness and the Thanet Times said Steve's absence was "a classic example of realising how effective a player is when he isn't there". The paper then described Steve as "an unsung hero" in its report on a 2-1 win at Whitstable in the FA Cup on 30.9.06.

On 14.10.06 Steve was sent off after lashing out at an opponent who held on to the ball after Danny Hockton had scored in injury time as Margate lost 2-1 at home to Potters Bar in the FA Cup and on 17.10.06 Steve got his first goal in a 3-2 defeat at Billericay. He made it back-to-back goals with a strike in a 3-1 win at Wivenhoe in the FA Trophy on 21.10.06 but having started 16 of Margate's first 17 games Steve then had to serve a three match suspension. Robin Trott told the Isle of Thanet Gazette "McKimm is a big influence in our team, hopefully we'll be all right without him. He's had a bit of stick this season, which I can't understand. What he does goes unnoticed, he does all the hard graft in midfield."

Steve made his comeback in a 2-0 win over Hampton & Richmond at Hartsdown Park on 11.11.06 and he then started the next eight matches in the number seven shirt. On 18.11.06 he scored in a 4-1 home win over Harrow and Steve was also on target in Margate's next game - a 3-1 win at Bromley on 21.11.06. He got his fifth goal of the season in a 4-1 win over visitors Hendon on 16.12.06 but on 26.12.06 Steve had to go off with a knee injury as Margate drew 1-1 at Ramsgate. He missed two matches before returning to the side in a 3-0 win at East Thurrock on 23.1.07.

On 27.1.07 Steve was sent off for the second time as Margate lost 3-2 at Hampton & Richmond. His dismissal after 68 minutes was bizarre and came about as he went to retrieve the ball after James Pinnock had scored. A Hampton player swung a punch at Steve which missed and flattened his own goalkeeper but for some reason the referee showed Steve a red card. He had to serve a five match ban for the sending off which coincided with a one game suspension for accumulating yellow cards.

After sitting out six matches Steve was back in the side for a game at Staines on 17.3.07 but shortly before the end of the first half he had to go off due to a recurrence of the knee problem he'd first suffered in December 2006. Margate lost 1-0 and the injury ended Steve's season. He missed the last ten matches of the campaign to finish with a record of five goals from 28 appearances.

Steve became Margate's player-coach ahead of the 2007/08 season and Robin Trott told the Isle of Thanet Gazette "He's a winner, he's a leader and we missed him badly when he was out with his knee last season. He's fully fit now and is also player-coach. He's similar to my old assistant Mick Flanagan in that he's very direct and says what he feels. He's positive and has taken to his new role really well."

Steve started the first seven matches of the new campaign wearing the number seven shirt and on 25.8.07 he scored in a 4-2 win over Wealdstone at Northwood in the Isthmian League Premier Division. He was also on target in a 2-1 defeat at Hastings on 4.9.07 but after a 1-1 draw at Staines on 8.9.07 Steve missed seven games due to a recurrence of the knee injury he'd suffered during 2006/07.

He returned to the side in an FA Cup tie at Hitchin on 13.10.07 and with a minute left Steve was sent off for what was deemed to be a head-butt on an opponent. Robin Trott told the Thanet Times "He didn't touch him. The other bloke leant in, so Macca did, but there was no contact. I thought it was harsh." Margate lost the game 4-3 and after featuring in the next three matches Steve had to serve a three game suspension.

He was back in the starting line-up for a 1-0 home defeat against Leamington in the FA Trophy on 6.11.07 and on 10.11.07 Steve scored in a 2-1 win over Harrow at Hartsdown Park. The Thanet Times said he "ran midfield" in a game at Harlow on 8.12.07 and Steve got Margate's goal as the game ended 1-1. He took his goal tally to five with a strike in a 4-1 home win over East Thurrock on 15.12.07 and the Thanet Times said Steve was "immense" and "ran the show" but just before the final whistle he had to go off with another knee injury.

After sitting out three matches Steve made his comeback in a 2-1 win over Ashford (Middlesex) at Hartsdown Park on 5.1.08 and after that he only missed one more game before the end of the season. On 1.3.08 he scored an injury time winner as Margate beat Maidstone 2-1 at Sittingbourne and his clever lob over former Margate keeper Pat Mullin took Steve's goal tally for the campaign to six.

On 15.4.08 Robin Trott was sacked so Steve became Margate's caretaker player-manager for the last two matches of the 2007/08 season. He told the Isle of Thanet Gazette that Trott had spoken to him and said "Without Robin's blessing I probably wouldn't have done it, because he was the one who brought me here. If I wasn't a contracted player then it might have been me to go as well. It's a bit of a shock to hear he's gone - I'm dumbfounded." Steve continued "It's just for two games and I will do my best. It's an old thing when a manager goes but hopefully we can win the last two games for Robin." With his contract due to expire at the end of the campaign the Gazette asked Steve about his future and he told the paper "I like it down here, I've really enjoyed my time at Margate. You never say never but it depends on who comes in and what their ideas are. They may think I'm too old or not good enough. I'd like to play on for as long as I can. I'm not getting any younger but I feel I can do a job for somebody for another couple of years, whether that's Margate or somebody else, because you're a long time retired."

Steve's first match in charge was a home game against Folkestone on 19.4.08 and it was a dramatic managerial baptism as the visitors won 5-4. Afterwards he told the Extra newspaper "I feel I can play on for one or two more years and I would like to go into management after that. I am not sure you can do both at once." When asked about the possibility of continuing as Margate's manager Steve said "I have not put my name in for it but I would possibly be interested if the situation came up."

On 26.4.08 his second and final game as manager saw Margate win 1-0 at Harrow and Steve came on as a substitute. It was his last appearance and having scored six goals from 39 appearances (three as sub) he left Margate in May 2008.

Steve then signed for Sutton and became the Isthmian League Premier Division outfit's player-coach. He played regularly during the 2008/09 and 2009/10 seasons but Steve then started to wind down his playing career during 2010/11, only making seven appearances (one as sub) as Sutton were promoted to the Conference South. He also played for Bromley's veterans side during the campaign.

Steve played five times for Sutton during 2011/12 but all of his outings were in cup matches and by the end of that season he'd made over 100 appearances without scoring. In the summer of 2012 Steve featured in some of the club's friendlies shortly after his 37th birthday.

He only played twice for Sutton during 2012/13 and Steve didn't play at all during 2013/14 before being appointed as manager of Tonbridge in May 2014.
