Tough-tackling Margate-born full-back who started his career with Ramsgate. Terry joined the club in 1948 after the Rams had spotted him playing in junior football and he went on to spend three seasons at Southwood. He was part of their side that won the Kent League Cup during 1948/49 and the Kent League title during 1949/50. Terry also played many games for Kent as an amateur during his time with Ramsgate.

In May 1951 Terry joined Margate and made his debut in a 0-0 draw with Whitstable at Hartsdown Park on 18.8.51. He quickly formed a notable full-back partnership with Jack Yeomanson.

During the 1951/52 campaign Terry made 32 appearances without scoring but contracted pleurisy in November and missed several games. Unluckily for him the illness first developed on the way to his honeymoon.

Terry continued to be the club's first-choice left-back during 1952/53 and added another 33 appearances but still didn't find the net. On 9.5.53 he was part of the side that drew 1-1 with visitors Folkestone on 9.5.53 to share the Kent Senior Shield and the Isle of Thanet Gazette's end of season round-up said that Terry "went through many successive matches without an opponent passing him".

Despite being troubled by a knee injury Terry made 35 appearances during 1953/54 and interested Football League clubs. He featured as Margate beat Canterbury 5-0 at Hartsdown Park to win the Kent League Cup on 6.5.54.

Terry notched up a further 42 appearances during the 1954/55 season to take his total for club comfortably past 100. He also finally broke his scoring duck when he got a late goal in a 3-2 defeat against Tunbridge Wells in the Kent League Cup Final at Hartsdown Park on 30.4.55.

During 1955/56 Terry made 35 more appearances but he missed about six weeks of the campaign due to an ankle injury. On 19.11.55 he was in the Margate side that drew 2-2 with Walsall at Hartsdown Park in the FA Cup 1st Round and Terry also played in the replay at Walsall on 24.11.55 that the home side won 6-1. At the end of the season Margate manager Almer Hall paid tribute to him saying "if we had 11 Terry Joyce's what a cracking side it would be." He added "We could have sold him over and over again. He is the finest left-back in the Kent League, bar none."

Terry made 42 appearances during the 1956/57 campaign and Derek Wells became his regular full-back partner due to Jack Yeomanson having injury problems. On 17.11.56 Terry was part of the Margate side that beat Dunstable 3-1 at Hartsdown Park in the FA Cup 1st Round and he also played in a 4-0 defeat at Millwall in the 2nd Round on 8.12.56. Terry scored twice during the season to triple his career tally for the club and his first goal came in a 3-1 win over Chatham at Hartsdown Park on 16.3.57. His second followed just a fortnight later in a 3-1 win at Ashford on 30.3.57. Terry actually played as a forward during that match but was quickly restored to his customary position of left-back.

Early in the 1957/58 season Terry made his 200th appearance for Margate and in total he played 39 times during the campaign although another ankle problem forced him to miss a few games. On 16.11.57 he played as Margate lost 3-2 to visitors Crystal Palace in the FA Cup 1st Round.

Terry managed to steer clear of injuries during the 1958/59 season and notched up 49 appearances, scoring twice more. The second of his strikes came in an 8-0 win over Sheppey on 2.5.59 and was Margate's 100th Kent League goal of the season. Earlier in the campaign - on 15.11.58 - Terry had been in the side that lost 3-2 at Headington in the FA Cup 1st Round.

The 1959/60 campaign saw Terry pass 300 appearances for the club and he played 47 games without scoring despite missing almost two months of the season through injury. On 14.11.59 he played in a 1-1 draw at Kettering in the FA Cup 1st Round and Terry also featured in the replay at Hartsdown Park on 19.11.59 that Margate won 3-2. He was then in the side that drew 0-0 with visitors Crystal Palace in the 2nd Round on 5.12.59 and took part in the replay at Selhurst Park on 9.12.59 that the Eagles won 3-0. At the end of the campaign Margate manager Almer Hall paid tribute to Terry at the club's annual meeting and said "I think he is an extremely good full-back, also, he mends my wireless set from time to time."

During the 1960/61 season Terry continued to be the club's first-choice left-back and he made a further 34 appearances. However he missed a portion of the season due to suffering a wrenched thigh.

The 1961/62 campaign saw Terry make 54 appearances to pass 400 for the club. He was as good as ever and the local paper described him as "evergreen" and "reliability personified". However on 16.9.61 Terry was sent off in a 1-1 draw at Canterbury after a clash with future Margate player Johnny Ray and he received a seven day ban. Remarkably Terry had never even been booked before. He also suffered head injuries in four consecutive games during November 1961 and in a famous FA Cup 1st Round tie at Bournemouth & Boscombe on 4.11.61 Terry was knocked out after 35 minutes but carried on despite having a minor concussion and helped Margate to win 3-0. He also featured in the 2nd Round tie against Notts County at Hartsdown Park on 25.11.61 which ended in a 1-1 draw and in the replay at Notts County on 30.11.61 which the home side won 3-1. On 12.5.62 Terry was part of the Margate side that beat visitors Folkestone 4-0 to win the Kent Senior Shield.

During the 1962/63 season he made a further 43 appearances and managed two goals, his first since the 1958/59 campaign. Terry was as steady and sound as usual as Margate won the Southern League Division One title and on 3.11.62 he was in the side that lost 3-1 at Millwall in the FA Cup 1st Round. On 7.5.63 Terry played as Margate won 2-0 at Maidstone in the 1st Leg of the Kent Floodlight Cup Final and he also featured in the 2nd Leg at Hartsdown Park on 13.5.63 which Margate won 3-0 to claim the trophy. On 1.6.63 he was in the team that beat visitors Bexleyheath & Welling 1-0 in the Kent Senior Shield Final.

Knee problems restricted his appearances during the 1963/64 campaign but Terry still played 41 times to take his appearance tally for the club past 500 - the first player ever to reach that landmark. On 21.9.63 he played as a left winger in a game against Wisbech and he was often outstanding during the season. On 16.11.63 Terry played as Margate drew 2-2 at Brentford in the FA Cup 1st Round and then on 20.11.63 he featured in the replay at Hartsdown Park that the Bees won 2-0.

In recognition of his superb service Terry was granted a testimonial - a Kent Floodlight Cup game against Folkestone at Hartsdown Park on 2.12.63. He was presented with a gold watch before the match which Margate unfortunately lost 3-1. The attendance was 1,523 and helped earn Terry the sum of £275, a figure which also included donations from the club and well-wishers.

On 30.4.64 Terry was booked for arguing in a 4-4 draw at Bexley and the match turned out to be his last for the club. In May 1964 he was controversially released, partly because his right knee was believed to be a major problem. However Terry refuted that and in fact only found out he'd been released when he read the local paper - a sad way to finish. The story made the front page of the Isle of Thanet Gazette under the headline "They Might Have Told Me - Says Axed Soccer Man".

Terry found himself out of football altogether at the start of the 1964/65 season but in October 1964 he rejoined Ramsgate, over 14 years since he'd left Southwood. A month earlier Terry had turned down an offer to play for Sittingbourne.

Terry made his last appearance for the Rams first team during the 1965/66 season and went on to manage their youth and reserve sides. He still played for the reserves during the 1966/67 and 1967/68 seasons.

He left Southwood by mutual consent in the summer of 1972 and later became manager of a local youth side called Northwood. Terry took on that role in the summer of 1981.

In 1973, prior to the Margate v Tottenham FA Cup tie, a piece about Terry appeared in The Sun newspaper. It was headed " Margate Miss The 'Tank' " and was full of memories about his playing style.

Terry was described as "a classically built full-back...short back and sides...a bull neck...barrel chest, massive legs and toe-capped boots". The article went on to describe what the author called "a Hartsdown Park ritual" - Terry's "specials." They were his crunching tackles - "The crowd would cheer him every ground-shaking inch of the way. He would run full tilt at a winger to a point about a dozen yards from the disaster area and there was a sort of excited wail from the terraces. Then a great oak of a leg would snap out and the turf would be scarred as he slid towards his victim. The sounds from the terraces were now akin to a four-ale bar at chucking-out time. Finally the crunch - just a blur of distorted limbs. The crowd, hoarse with excitement, would take a few minutes to simmer down into muttered appreciation of a job well done. That he always got the ball, never the man, was, I feel, the result of truly sensible discretion on the part of opponents".

Terry worked as a radio mechanic early in his football career and later worked for Standfast as a Technical Manager for many years. He was also a Kent table tennis player.

In 2007 Terry was still living in the Margate area, not far from Hartsdown Park.

By March 2014 he was living in care home in Thanet and unfortunately suffering from dementia.
