Aggressive forward born in Woodford Green, Essex who started his senior career with Isthmian League club Ilford after leaving school and also featured in West Ham's junior sides during the 1960/61 season. Terry scored for the Hammers youth team as they won 4-3 at Millwall on 3.9.60 in the South Eastern Counties League.

Terry left Ilford to join Cambridge City and his next move took him to Wisbech where he played as a professional for three seasons under former England player Jesse Pye before linking up with Folkestone.

After two seasons with Folkestone under Wilf Armory Terry signed for Woodford.

Terry joined Margate from Woodford in the summer of 1966 and became a regular member of the reserve team during the 1966/67 campaign.

Terry also made 18 first team appearances (one as a substitute) and scored six times as Margate won promotion from the Southern League Division One by finishing as runners-up. His goals included one on his debut in a 2-1 win at Hastings on 31.8.66. Terry impressed when called upon and on 18.3.67 his performance in a 4-1 Southern League win over Kettering at Hartsdown Park was described as "outstanding" by the local press. Terry scored twice during the game.

During the 1967/68 season he made nine further first team appearances and scored three goals, including a 20 yard effort in a 7-4 win at Dartford on 29.11.67. On 13.12.67 Terry was in the side that won 3-1 at Yeovil in the FA Cup 1st Round. He also scored regularly for the reserves and got five goals in a 10-0 win over Ashford Reserves on 10.2.68. However on 24.2.68 Terry was sent off during a game against Ramsgate Reserves.

In the summer of 1968 he was appointed player-manager of the reserve team and also became coach to the first team. Terry told the Isle of Thanet Gazette "I've always been a fringe player - never in the first team regularly - and at my age I'm not going to improve, I don't want to leave the game so coaching is a logical step."

Terry continued in that role during the 1969/70 season and became a qualified FA coach. However a sending off for the reserves in December 1969 came back to haunt him in February 1970. As a result of an incident with the referee Terry was banned from all football for an unprecedented ten months, a punishment that he said left him feeling "sick and bitter." In his absence former Margate player Don Alexander took over the running of the reserve and 'A' teams.

When his suspension was completed at the end of 1970 Terry returned to the club and continued with his previous duties.

He played a few games for the reserves during the remainder of the 1970/71 campaign and was described as a "wily old fox" by the local paper. Terry also made two first team appearances, his first since the 1967/68 season, and both were in the Kent Floodlight Cup. The first of them was as a substitute in a 1-1 draw with Bexley at Hartsdown Park on 18.1.71 and the other, Terry's last for the club, was in a 3-1 defeat at Bexley on 21.4.71. He wore the number eight shirt that night. Terry had also taken part in another Kent Floodlight Cup match on 12.4.71 when he acted as linesman for Margate's home tie against Dover.

During October 1971 he assisted caretaker player-manager Eddie Clayton in the interim period between Gerry Baker leaving the club and Les Riggs arriving from Ramsgate.

In the summer of 1973 Ray John took over as manager of the reserves but Terry continued in his role of first team trainer, he also played local football for Margate Athletic at that time. However in June 1974 he left the club and was replaced by Phil Winfield.

Terry then moved into management and took over as Deal's boss in February 1975, replacing former Margate star Gordon Burden. He continued in the role, whilst making a few appearances as a player, until the end of the 1977/78 season when Deal were forced to let him go due to economic reasons.

Terry then returned to Margate as reserve team manager for the 1978/79 season and in the summer of 1979 he was appointed as first team manager following the departure of Jack Smith.

During the 1979/80 season Terry was twice forced to name himself as substitute but didn't have to come on and the same thing happened twice more during the 1980/81 campaign and once during 1981/82. In August 1982 he fell down the tunnel steps at Hartsdown Park and dislocated his shoulder.

Terry resigned as manager of Thanet United in November 1982, he'd originally offered to quit in October but the board rejected his proposal at that time.

He then returned to management in the summer of 1984 when he took over as boss of Sunday League outfit Margate Athletic.

In 2014 Terry was living in Margate - in the same street as his fellow 1960's player Bryan Clifton - and on 12.4.14 he was one of the many former Margate players who attended the club's 'Legends Day' at Hartsdown Park.
