Spectators at Hartsdown Park in the 1930's

This photo was published in a local paper in January 1979 and there was a debate about which decade it was taken in. I'm almost certain it was the mid-1930's. The picture prompted several people to contact the paper and one of them was 'Nobby' Pilcher who identified some of the people sitting as follows:

From the left: 'Nobby' Pilcher, Alby Wakerall, Unknown, Bob Wainwright (later Margate's trainer for many years) and Monty Edwards.

'Nobby' also identified 'Buster' Horn, 'Tucker' Brazier and Wally Horn as three of the supporters standing behind the fence.

Interestingly 'Nobby' said "I was still wearing overalls because some of us had just finished building the stand at the Garlinge side of the ground. Club officials had told us if it was completed that morning we could stay put and watch the game". If that was true it dates the photo to the 1934/35 season when the North stand was built although other people contacted the paper with different ideas. A Mr J. William Girling believed the photo was taken at the first ever match at Hartsdown Park (1929) but that seems very unlikely. Meanwhile Charles Beeching who was Margate's trainer for a period in the 1930's said the photo was taken when Margate entertained Ipswich in what he said was the club's first ever Southern League game. He said that Ipswich won 3-0. There's definitely some confusion with that idea as Margate played their first Southern League game during 1933/34 and the opponents weren't Ipswich. But Margate did play Ipswich at Hartsdown Park on one occasion - 12.9.36 - and lost 1-0 so possibly the photo might have been taken then. A bit of a mystery then.
