Plymouth Argyle Reserves were Margate's opponents as they had won the Southern League (Western Section) the previous season, whereas Margate had won both the Southern League Eastern and Midweek Sections. In later years, the SLCH match was played between the champions of the Southern League and the Southern League Cup winners.
