Player Profile:
Powerfully-built local player who joined Margate for the 1971/72 season as a 16 year-old. John played regularly for the reserves during the campaign and also made four first-team appearances. He made his debut in a Kent Floodlight Cup tie at Folkestone on 15.3.72 and, although Margate lost 3-0, John gave what the local press described as an "outstanding" performance at centre-back. He was also praised for his "cool defensive play". Two of John's other appearances were at right-back and, in a 1-0 win at Dover in the Kent Floodlight Cup on 12.4.72, he was said to have given "repeated evidence of his skill" and been "outstanding" again.
During the 1972/73 season, John continued to be a regular in the reserves and he also made one further first-team appearance, playing in a Kent Floodlight Cup tie at Hastings on 15.11.72 that Margate lost 6-0.
He stayed with the club for the 1973/74 campaign but played exclusively for the reserves, even turning out as a goalkeeper for them on occasions.
John then dropped into local amateur football but rejoined Margate in March 1977 and made three first-team appearances (one as sub) before the end of the 1976/77 season. However, at the end of the campaign he left the club and returned to local football.
John was still playing locally during the 1983/84 season.
His son Ian joined Margate during the 2002/03 season.
