Player Profile:
Defender Tom joined Gillingham's youth set up and signed as a professional at the beginning of the 2008-09 season. After loan spells at Ramsgate and Dover Athletic, he made his first-team debut for Gillingham on 26.12.09 in a 1–0 League One defeat at home to Brentford.
After nine appearances for the Gills, Tom signed for Dover Athletic in August 2010 and had a long spell at Crabble. Tom was in the Dover team that won the Conference South play-off final at Ebbsfleet United on 10.5.2014. He also played in the 4-0 FA Cup Third Round defeat at home to Crystal Palace on 4.1.2015.
In September 2015, he joined Dartford. He became their regular left back until leaving for Margate ahead of the 2017-18 season. Tom scored in the Thanet Cup game, a 3-3 draw at Ramsgate on 4.8.17.
On 24.10.17, an injury to keeper Patrick Lee in the warm-up meant Tom had to play in goal for the whole of an Isthmian League Cup tie at home to Corinthian Casuals. There was no sub keeper that night. After a 2-2 draw, Margate lost 5-3 on penalties.
On 2.4.18, Tom was sent off for handling a shot by Ian Draycott on the goal line in a 1-1 draw at Folkestone Invicta. Tom finished the season having made 48 appearances plus one as sub.
He started the 2018-19 campaign with a rare goal in a 5-2 home win over Corinthian Casuals on 11.8.19.
On 20.10.2018, Tom's season ended when he snapped his Achilles in the first half of a 0-0 draw at Bognor Regis. Ironically, he had just returned to the side after several weeks with a calf injury.
Manager Mike Sandmann told Kent Online: "It's devastating news for everyone, and particularly Tom because he's self-employed (as a plumber) and he and his wife have a newborn baby. He's a massive character, on and off the pitch, and it's no coincidence that our recent run of form has come about since he came back into the side.
"I've spoken to him since and he was the usual Tom Wynter, laughing and joking. He said 'Mike you either be like this or you cry' and that's typical of him."
The club announced plans to raise funds for Tom. He had made ten appearances during 2018-19.
Ramsgate unveiled Tom as a new signing ahead of the 2019-20 campaign but in December 2019 he joined Hythe Town. His debut for Hythe was against Ramsgate at Southwood on 21.12.19.
In the summer of 2021, Tom announced his retirement from football aged 31 but swiftly changed his mind and started the season in Hythe’s team.
In 2023-24, he was named joint manager at SCEFL club Lydd Town with another ex-Margate player, James Rogers. In 2025-26, Tom was assistant manager at Herne Bay under another former Margate player, Liam Friend, with James as player-coach.
Tom is the son of former Ashford Town and Dover Athletic player Carlton Wynter.
