Born in Sligo, Ireland, midfielder Barry joined Millwall aged 15 from Dublin-based youth team Belvedere. 

2004 was a big year for Barry. He was called up to the Republic of Ireland under-21 squad for the Madeira International Tournament where he made his debut against Madeira on 27.2.04.

He also broke into the Millwall first-team, making his debut on 20.4.04 as a sub in a 2-1 Championship defeat at home to Watford.

Aged 19, Barry came on as a sub in the 74th minute of the 2004 FA Cup Final against Manchester United at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on 22.5.04, which Millwall lost 3-0 in front of 71,350.

He remained at Millwall for two further seasons, making 30 appearances in all competitions, including two UEFA Cup games against Ferencvárosi in 2004-05.

In August 2006, Barry joined League Two club Barnet for an undisclosed fee. He remained there for one season, making 46 appearances, before he was released.

Barry joined League One Gillingham in June 2007. He made his debut in a 3-0 defeat at Watford in the League Cup on 14.8.07. In March 2008, he was loaned to Grays Athletic. Gillingham released Barry at the end of 2007-08.

Barry joined Grays Athletic permanently in summer 2008 and finished 2008-09 as Grays’ top scorer in all competitions.

Barry signed for Crawley Town of Conference National in summer 2009. He was released by mutual consent in November 2010 and signed for Dover Athletic of Conference South. He helped them to win promotion via the play-offs to Conference National in 2013-14.

In September 2014, Barry joined Margate on loan from Dover. He scored on his debut, which was a 4-2 win at home to Canvey Island on 20.9.14. He made four further appearances and scored once more, in a 4-1 win at Bury Town on 4.10.14.

Barry returned to Dover and appeared for them in their 4-0 FA Cup Third Round defeat against Crystal Palace at Crabble on 4.1.15.

In July 2015, he signed for National League South side Dartford on a free transfer but was released at the end of the 2015-16 season.

After spells with Leatherhead and Hastings United, Cogan returned to Grays in June 2017 and left in 2019.
