Player Profile:

Brave keeper who began his career playing amateur football in the London area before being signed by Birmingham City.

Len joined Margate during the 1963/64 season although the club had tried to sign him two years previously when he was still in amateur football. He made his debut on 27.3.64 in a Southern League game at Wellington and had what the local press described as "a day to remember" - pulling off several outstanding saves and displaying clean handling throughout the 1-1 draw. Len then kept his place for most of the campaign's remaining games, making nine appearances in total and keeping out the club's established first team keeper Brian Hughes. On 4.4.64 Len's performance in an away game at Cambridge City led to him being applauded off at half-time and the local press described him as being the best player on the field. He also produced a brilliant performance in a game at Weymouth on 21.4.64.

Len made a further nine appearances during the early part of the 1964/65 campaign, battling Hughes for the first team berth. However by early 1965 Hughes had firmly re-established himself as the club's first-choice keeper. As a result Len asked to be released and in February 1965 his contract was cancelled by mutual consent. Part of the problem was that Margate no longer had a reserve team so he often wasn't playing at all.
