Local player who was playing for Regal Spartans in the Thanet Premier Sunday League as early as the 1973-74 season and also played hockey for Kent about that time. John later joined Ramsgate and played for their reserves during the 1977-78 campaign.

He then dropped back into local amateur football but, in February 1981, John joined Margate following the departure of most of the club's first-team squad due to a financial crisis. He made his debut in a 3-0 defeat at Dartford on 28.2.81 and went on to make a total of six appearances, playing at either left-back or centre-back, before leaving the club at the end of the 1980-81 season. John then moved back into Sunday football and in later years he had a spell as landlord of the Ruby Lounge pub in Margate.

By 2006, John was running the Kabuki bar on Margate seafront.

He sadly died on 13.11.10 aged only 55.
