6' 0" tall keeper born in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, who also played cricket professionally and fitted his football in around his cricket commitments.

Peter started his football career with his hometown club and made his debut for Weston-super-Mare aged just 17 towards the end of the 1998/99 season.

He later had spells with Bishop Sutton and Torrington before linking up with Western League club Weston St Johns. Early in the 2003/04 season, Peter made a one-off appearance for his old club Weston-super-Mare as part of an emergency loan deal from St Johns and in December 2003 he signed for Southern League outfit Clevedon.

Peter made 23 appearances for Clevedon during the remainder of the 2003/04 campaign and also played in some of their summer 2004 friendlies but didn't feature in the first-team once the 2004/05 season proper got under way.

In September 2004, Mangotsfield put in a seven-day approach to Clevedon for Peter's services but he was then offered the chance of playing for Margate. Mangotsfield manager Martyn Grimshaw said: "Pete has gone about things in the right way and he did phone to tell me he had been asked to play for Margate...I'm hoping he'll tell me the travelling is too much for him and he wants to sign for us." Peter still lived in Weston-super-Mare at the time.

He made his debut for Margate in a Conference South game at Maidenhead on 18.9.04 and dived to his left to save an 82nd minute penalty as Margate won 4-2. The Thanet Times' match report was headlined "Peter Perfect" and the paper said it was a "great save" that "wrote him into Margate folklore". From then on Peter was a fixture in the Margate goal.

In its report on a 2-0 defeat at Sutton on 26.10.04, the Isle of Thanet Gazette said "if it had not been for Gate keeper Peter Trego, they would have won by more" and the paper then said he was in "good form" during a 2-0 win at Welling in the Conference Cup on 2.11.04.

After a run of ten games in the side, Peter arrived late due to traffic problems as Margate took on Havant & Waterlooville at their adopted home in Ashford on 13.11.04 so back-up keeper Nej Hussein started the match. Peter came on at half-time as Margate won 5-1 and the Thanet Times said "in truth he could have stayed on the bench, as Havant failed to register a decent effort on target in the second half". The paper then said Peter had "a disappointing afternoon" as Margate drew 3-3 at St.Albans on 20.11.04 and was "caught out for two of the home side's goals". First a low 30-yard effort bounced over his arms as he dived and then Peter failed to hold corner and a home player knocked the loose ball home.

On 29.11.04, Margate won 2-1 at Thurrock in the Conference Cup and the Isle of Thanet Gazette said Peter "did his bit" to ensure victory "with an excellent double save". However, the paper said he "looked nervous when dealing with crosses" in a 2-1 defeat against Welling at Ashford on 28.12.04.

Peter continued to be Margate's regular keeper during the early months of 2005 and on 12.3.05 he was sent off in a match at Hornchurch after a bizarre back pass from striker Rocky Baptiste left him totally exposed and facing two attackers. Peter pulled down future Margate striker Chris Stowe to concede a penalty and received his marching orders. The Thanet Times felt he'd been left "pretty much helpless" and Hornchurch scored their spot-kick to win the game 1-0. The paper said Peter had made a "magnificent save" shortly before his dismissal, plunging quickly to block close-range effort. A bad month for Peter continued on 19.3.05 when he misjudged a cross in the last minute of a game against Carshalton at Ashford and the ball drifted into the net to give the Surrey side a 1-0 win. Margate manager Chris Kinnear was so disappointed with the goal that he immediately left the dugout and headed back to the changing rooms before the final whistle.

After a run of 23 consecutive appearances, Peter sat out a game against Cambridge City on 28.3.05 due to suspension but he returned for a 2-2 draw at Bognor Regis on 2.4.05 and didn't miss another match. On 12.4.05, he was the closest player to Folkestone Invicta's former Margate striker Paul Sykes when he collapsed in a Kent Senior Cup tie and subsequently tragically died.

On 16.4.05, just four days after Paul Sykes' passing, Peter was in goal as Margate travelled to Eastbourne Borough for a Conference South fixture and it turned out to be a memorable day for him. With four minutes to go and Margate 1-0 down, Peter took a free-kick from just outside the Margate penalty area and, having spotted the Eastbourne keeper was off his line, floated the ball 70 yards into the net to make it 1-1. That was the final score and the Thanet Times said Peter's effort was a "wonder goal". He was only the fourth goalkeeper ever to score for Margate in a competitive game since the club's formation in 1896.

A week later, Margate's relegation from the Conference South was confirmed but Peter ended his season on a high note when he was part of the side that won the Kent Senior Cup after beating Dover 2-1 in the Final at Folkestone on 2.5.05. The Isle of Thanet Gazette's report said he was "unpredictable" during the match and it was Peter's final game for Margate. He'd made a total of 41 appearances (one as sub) and his dedication in travelling from Somerset for matches was recognised by Margate's Supporters Club who gave him a special award for his commuting efforts.

After leaving Margate, Peter concentrated on cricket before joining Chippenham Town in November 2005. He made his debut in a 3-2 win at Hemel Hempstead in an FA Trophy tie on 12.11.05 and remarkably marked his first outing with a goal. Peter found the net with a long-range free-kick that was very similar to his goal for Margate at Eastbourne and his next appearance for Chippenham was in an FA Cup 1st Round replay on 14.11.05 - a 1-0 defeat at Worcester. Shortly afterwards, Peter left the club and his footballing activities ceased as his cricket career blossomed.

As a big-hitting all-rounder, Peter became a very well-known player on the county cricket circuit and, after making his first class debut for Somerset in 2000, he made his maiden first class century in a game against West Indies A at Taunton on 26.7.02, eventually scoring 140. He played for Kent during the 2003 season and then had one-year spells with Worcestershire and Middlesex before returning to Somerset in 2006.

In 2010, Peter was selected for an England Lions side that played a series of one-day games in the United Arab Emirates and the Lions were effectively an England second X1. While still on Somerset's books, Peter was appointed as captain of the Sylhet Royals for the inaugural Bangladesh Premier League Twenty 20 competition that started in February 2012 and he then returned home to play for Somerset again during the 2012 domestic season in England.

Peter briefly returned to football in 2015 when he joined Bath City on a non-contract basis. Bizarrely, his only appearance was as an outfield player in a Somerset Premier Cup game against Street in November 2015.

Peter was released by Somerset at the end of the 2019 season and joined Nottinghamshire on a two-year deal. He retired from cricket in 2021.
