Player Profile:

Prolific two-footed centre-forward born in Doncaster who was strong in the air. Alfred joined Margate from Yorkshire League side Harworth Colliery in November 1948 having scored 38 times for them during 1947/48 and 23 times already in the 1948/49 season.

His debut couldn't have been more impressive - Alfred scored a hat-trick as Margate beat Deal 6-0 in a Kent League game played at Hartsdown Park on 18.12.48. He carried on scoring throughout the remainder of the 1948/49 season and in total found the net 30 times in only 24 appearances. This made him the club's top scorer. Included in his goals were another hat-trick - against Folkestone on 26.2.49 - and two five-goal hauls that amazingly came in consecutive matches. The games concerned were a 6-1 win over Maidstone at Hartsdown on 18.4.49 and a 7-1 win over Royal Marines Chatham, also at Hartsdown, on 27.4.49. Alfred also managed a run where he scored in seven consecutive matches - from 19.2.49 to 2.4.49 inclusive.

However, he left the club at the end of the season and joined Ashford before moving on to Snowdown in November 1949. He was still playing for Snowdown during the 1950/51 campaign.

Alfred's nickname was 'Bob' Hope and he died in his native Doncaster in December 1991 aged 69.
