Player Profile:

Burly centre-forward born in Leytonstone, Essex, who began his career with Eton Manor before joining Arsenal in July 1948.

Ernest spent three seasons at Highbury and made about 100 appearances for the Gunners' junior sides, playing only once for the reserves. At the end of the 1950/51, season he was released and signed for Leyton Orient.

Ernest didn't settle at Orient and, after making only a couple of reserve team appearances, he joined Margate on loan in November 1951.

Ernest made his debut in a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Folkestone at Hartsdown Park on 1.12.51 and on 8.12.51 he scored his first goal for Margate in a 6-1 home win over Bowaters Lloyd. He went on to score six times in 13 appearances before returning to the Brisbane Road in February 1952 but he was soon released by Orient.

He was also an Essex county cricketer and played in 13 first class matches for them between 1950 and 1952. In addition Ernest scored several 100s for the second X1.

He died in Harlow, Essex, on 20.8.06 aged 79.
