Player Profile:

Fast, strong centre-forward with a powerful shot who had a spell with Bradford City before joining Ashford for the 1936/37 campaign. J W spent one season with the Nuts & Bolts and then left the Kent area.

In January 1947 he signed for Margate having temporarily returned to Kent and at that time J W was serving in the Navy which limited his games for the club.

He made a stunning debut for Margate in a Kent League match against Royal Marines Chatham at Hartsdown Park on 22.2.47, scoring four times in an 8-3 win. That made J W the first post-war Margate player to register a hat-trick in his first outing for the club and as of July 2013 only one other player had scored more on their debut.

J W also scored in his next appearance as Margate won 3-0 at Sittingbourne on 15.3.47 and on 29.3.47 he bagged a brace in a 5-0 home win over Betteshanger. In all he scored nine times in only eight outings and J W's final appearance came in a 3-1 defeat at Snowdown on 24.5.47. He left the club at the end of the season.
