Player Profile:

Hitchin-born sturdy full-back who started his career as an apprentice at Swindon but never made the first-team there.

In October 1964, John moved to Oxford and he made 74 first-team appearances for them before joining Aldershot in February 1969.

John never gained a regular place in the Aldershot side and as a result he moved to Margate in July 1970.

He made his debut in a 3-0 win at Telford on 15.8.70, the opening day of the 1970/71 Southern League season. John was described as being "highly capable" by the local press and he established himself at left-back, making 55 appearances during the campaign. On 21.11.70 he played as Margate lost 2-0 at Dagenham in the FA Cup 1st Round. John scored once, Margate's consolation in a 4-1 defeat at Chelmsford on 13.3.71, but he was released in the summer of 1971.

He joined Ramsgate for the 1971/72 campaign and spent the 1972/73 and 1973/74 seasons at Southwood too. In December 1973, he was sent off in two consecutive games for the Rams.
