Player Profile:

Centre-forward who started his career with amateur club Neville United before linking up with Chelmsford in the summer of 1952. John scored ten goals in 33 Southern League appearances for City during the 1952/53 campaign but found his first-team opportunities limited in the next two seasons and he was released in May 1955.

John joined Folkestone for the start of the 1955/56 campaign and then had a spell with Tottenham at the beginning of 1956/57.

He scored nine goals for Spurs 'A' team before joining Margate in October 1956.

John scored on his Margate debut, getting an 87th minute equaliser to secure a 1-1 home draw with Snowdown in the Kent League on 27.10.56, and went on to score a total of six goals in 11 first-team appearances. His tally included two goals in a 5-2 win over Gillingham Reserves at Hartsdown Park on 24.11.56 and on 17.11.56 John scored as Margate beat Dunstable 3-1 at Hartsdown Park in the FA Cup First Round. He also played in a 4-0 defeat at Millwall in the Second Round on 8.12.56.

In January 1957, John left the club to join Clacton of the Eastern Counties League.

He went back to Chelmsford in the summer of 1957 but only made 11 more appearances there before being released. In total, he'd scored 18 goals from 60 appearances for City during his two spells with the club.
