Dartford-born son of Tony Tipple, Margate's Commercial Manager at the time, who made a one-off appearance as a substitute during the first half of the 1979/80 season. Gavin replaced Darren Chittenden after 65 minutes of a Southern League game at Dorchester on 8.9.79.

He later had a spell with Ramsgate and also played for various London amateur clubs.

In 1988, Gavin was living in the Hillingdon area of London and by 2013 he'd served in the Royal Air Force for over 30 years.
