Player Profile:

5' 9" tall, versatile left-sided player born in Tottenham who started his career as an apprentice at Watford. John signed professional forms in September 1964 and went on to make over 400 appearances for Watford spanning the 1964/65 to 1974/75 seasons. Whilst with the Hornets, John played in the 1970 FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea and he also made well over 50 reserve team appearances.

After almost 11 years at Vicarage Road, John was transferred to Colchester in July 1975 and he went on to make 128 senior appearances for them before joining Margate in the summer of 1978.

He made his debut at left-back in a 0-0 draw at Dartford on 19.8.78 and later had spells as a central defender and left winger during the season. John made a total of 46 appearances (one as a substitute) and scored twice. One of his goals was a penalty and the other was a powerful shot from the edge of the penalty area in a 3-3 draw with Dartford on 11.9.78. In January 1979 he dropped a concrete block on his foot at work and missed a few games as a result.

John made a further 19 appearances, again in a variety of positions, during the first half of the 1979/80 campaign before joining Gravesend & Northfleet in December 1979. Andy Coghill joined Margate on loan at the same time. John was finding the travel from his Colchester home difficult and he went on to play regularly in Gravesend's Alliance Premier League side, making 36 appearances in total, before moving to Chelmsford during the 1980/81 season.
