This prestige friendly was arranged to mark 60 years of football at Hartsdown Park and the return of the name of Margate after eight seasons as Thanet United. Arsenal, who were English champions at the time, brought a team including Brian Marwood, Paul Davis, Nigel Winterburn and a young Andy Cole. Two-down at half-time, Margate’s goal came when the score was 4-0 and was a late consolation from sub Marc Smelt.
