Friendly – Margate v Luton Town, May 7th, 1971
In honour of former manager Almer Hall, Luton Town sent their first-team to Hartsdown for this friendly. Spearheading the attack for Luton was future Arsenal and England striker, Malcolm Macdonald. The following day, he was transferred to Newcastle United. Information, report and team sheet has been supplied by Roger Wash of Hatters Heritage
Guesting for Margate was Vic Akers, who later became the manager of Arsenal FC Ladies and was awarded an OBE. Margate turned out in their away kit of green and black stripes, identical to that worn by Coventry City where Gerry Baker, the then Margate player/manager, spent two seasons before moving to the Kent coast. Although the team sheet shows Luton as playing in their traditional white shirts, they actually played in red.
