Versatile Bexley-born player who started his career with Erith & Belvedere, progressing through the club's youth set up to the first team. Alan scored on his senior debut at the start of the 1990/91 season and was also on target in a 3-0 home win over Margate on 11.9.90. On 20.11.90 he scored twice as the Deres beat Margate 3-1 in a Kent Senior Cup tie and Alan was still only 17 at the time.

At the start of 1991 he moved on to Kent League club Alma Swanley before being signed by Maidstone in July 1991. The Stones were in the Football League at the time.

Alan went on to make four first team appearances for Maidstone during 1991/92, all as a substitute, and at the end of the campaign he was released.

In the summer of 1992 Alan played in some friendlies for Ashford but opted to join Dartford for the start of the 1992/93 campaign. When the Darts folded a few weeks into the season he signed for Margate.

Alan made his debut as a substitute in a 2-1 defeat at Newport IOW on 31.10.92 and made his first full appearance on 7.11.92 when he played as a striker in a 2-1 defeat against Wealdstone at Hartsdown Park. The Thanet Times then said Alan was "a veritable beaver in midfield" in a 1-0 home win over Andover on 14.11.92 and it was the start of a run of five games for him in the centre of the park. On 17.11.92 Alan scored his first goal for Margate, firing home a stunning shot from fully 25 yards in a 4-1 win at Ashford. The Thanet Times said he was "a livewire" in midfield during a 3-0 win at Baldock on 21.11.92 but on 8.12.92 Alan was switched to left-back for a 4-0 home defeat against Ashford. His next four appearances were all in the number three shirt and in its report for a 2-0 win over Havant at Hartsdown on 12.12.92 the Times described Alan as being "nimble" at full-back. On 2.1.93 he made a one-off appearance as a central defender as Margate entertained Newport IOW at Hartsdown and Alan scored the equaliser in a 1-1 draw with what the Times said was "a gem of a leveller". The paper described his 20 yard effort as a "deadly knee-high cannonball...which thundered against the inside of the post and then spun over the line". After featuring at left-back in a 2-0 defeat at Gravesend & Northfleet on 5.1.93 Alan played twice more on the opposite side of the defence and when he wore the number two shirt for a 3-1 home defeat against Fisher on 19.1.93 it was his last game for Margate. At the end of January 1993 he left the club and joined Boreham Wood having scored twice in 16 appearances (one as sub).

Before the end of the 1992/93 season Alan had a trial with Leyton Orient and in the summer of 1993 he rejoined Erith.

In December 1993 Alan returned to Dartford and he stayed with the club until joining Tonbridge in July 1995. He'd made 56 appearances (one as sub) and scored two goals for the Darts.

He became Tonbridge's captain for the 1995/96 campaign and spent two seasons with the Angels before linking up with Gravesend & Northfleet for the start of 1997/98.

Alan made ten league appearances (three as sub) for the Fleet before rejoining Dartford for a brief third spell in December 1997. Alan moved on to Tonbridge before the end of the season.

He stayed with the Angels for almost four years and scored in a 3-2 defeat at Margate in a Kent Senior Cup tie on 2.11.99. Alan went on to make over 150 appearances before moving on to Ashford during the 2001/02 campaign.

In the summer of 2002 Alan rejoined Dartford and scored once in 12 appearances during his fourth spell with the club that lasted until December 2003 when he returned to Maidstone.

After a few weeks with the Stones Alan joined Herne Bay in January 2004 and in the summer of 2004 he signed for Hastings.

Alan made 15 league appearances (two as sub) for Hastings before leaving the club midway through the 2004/05 season and dropping out of senior football.
