Oxford-born defender who started his career at Charlton and progressed through their youth ranks to the fringes of the first team squad by the start of the 1962/63 season.

After leaving The Valley Barry had a short spell with Aldershot before joining Portsmouth in July 1964. He went on to make 17 first team appearances for Pompey during the 1964/65 campaign.

Barry joined Wimbledon for 1965/66 and after making 91 appearances during three seasons there he moved on to Margate in the summer of 1968.

Barry didn't make his first team debut until 20.11.68 when Margate went down 2-1 at Dover in a Kent Floodlight Cup tie and it turned out to be his only senior appearance during the 1968/69 campaign. Three days later during a reserve team game against Chatham at Hartsdown he suffered a badly gashed leg and a few days after the match Barry collapsed and tetanus was diagnosed. His doctor thought that the infection may have stemmed from sheep who'd grazed on Hartsdown Park during the Second World War. Barry was taken to Tooting hospital in London and for several weeks he was very seriously ill. Happily he gradually recovered and by January 1969 he was well enough to be visited by Margate officials. However at the end of the season Barry was released.

Barry's illness sadly ended his senior career and although he later attempted to make a comeback of sorts in Sunday morning football it didn't work out and in 1970 Barry retired altogether.

His misfortune led directly to the PFA ensuring that every player had to have tetanus injections as a matter of course. This came about as Barry's friend from his Charlton days Mike Bailey who by then was captain of Wolves ensured the PFA took the matter up with all its members.

In 2008 Barry was living in Weybridge, Surrey where he earnt a living doing driving jobs.
