Ramsgate-born player educated at Chatham House school who started his career with West Ham. Bernard played for the Hammers' South Eastern Counties League and Metropolitan League sides during the 1959/60 season.

After leaving West Ham he joined Ramsgate for the 1960/61 campaign and had a trial with Southampton during the season.

In April 1961 Bernard crossed Thanet and signed for Margate. He made his debut in a 1-0 defeat at Nuneaton on 22.4.61 and played twice more before the end of the campaign. Bernard left the club in the summer of 1961.

He joined Ashford for 1961/62 but only played one Southern League game for the Nuts & Bolts during the season.

He then had a spell at Hastings early in the 1962/63 season before joining Maidstone United. Bernard also began training as a policeman at that time.

He later returned to Ramsgate and played a few games for their reserves during the 1963/64 season.

By the start of the 1968/69 campaign Bernard was a serving police officer and was playing football for Kent Police.

During the late 1990's and early 2000's he worked at Sittingbourne's Central Park stadium as the greyhound track manager. In 2009 Bernard was living in the Maidstone area.
