Versatile local player who progressed from junior side Westgate Sports into Thanet United's reserve team during the 1982/83 season.

Carl stayed with United for the 1983/84 campaign and did well during the first team's pre-season friendlies. He made his first team debut aged 19 on the opening day of the season when he came on as a substitute during a 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Woodford on 20.8.83. After making one further sub appearance, Carl made his full debut in a 1-0 defeat at Dunstable on 27.8.83. He played as a striker and continued in that role for the three matches that followed. He continued to feature regularly, sometimes as a midfielder, until the end of September 1983 but after that Carl's appearances were very sporadic until April 1984. However he then featured in six of the 1983/84 season's last seven games and was a great success as an emergency centre-back in a 1-1 draw at Road-Sea Southampton on 2.5.84. The Isle of Thanet Gazette said Carl earned "maximum marks for an outstanding performance". He finished the season having made 20 appearances, nine of them as a substitute.

At the start of the 1984/85 campaign Carl found himself back in United's reserves and he didn't appear in the first team until 18.9.84 when he came on as a substitute during a 3-2 defeat at Canterbury in the Southern League Cup. After that Carl established himself in the heart of the Thanet defence and he was a fixture in the side throughout the remainder of 1984. The Thanet Times said that he was "outstanding" in a 1-0 win over Poole at Hartsdown on 10.11.84 and on 27.11.84 Carl capped an impressive performance by scoring his first goal for the club as United beat Hastings 2-1 in an Eastern Floodlight Cup tie. The Isle of Thanet Gazette described his header as "superb" and said that he "rose majestically" to score. During the second half of the season Carl often found himself out of favour, mainly due to the form of Bob Walter, but he continued to impress when called upon. The local press praised his "many timely interceptions" during a 1-0 win over Andover at Hartsdown on 5.4.85 and by the end of the season Carl had made 33 appearances (three as sub), scoring once.

He found himself back in the reserves during the early months of the 1985/86 campaign, making only two substitute appearances until 12.11.85 when he wore the number nine shirt as United entertained Canterbury in a Southern League match. Carl kept his place in the forward line for Thanet's next game on 16.11.85 and he scored with what the Thanet Times described as a "cannonball drive from just inside the box" in a 3-2 win over Dunstable at Hartsdown. After one more appearance as a striker, at Tonbridge on 20.11.85, Carl found himself out of the first team picture until 29.3.86 when he played in midfield as United were thrashed 6-0 at Cambridge City. He made a few more appearances, mainly as a substitute, to take his overall total to 12 (six as sub) without adding to his goal tally before the end of the season.

In the summer of 1986 Carl joined Ramsgate and became a fixture in their side during the 1986/87, 1987/88 and 1988/89 seasons. He started 1989/90 at Southwood too and on 15.8.89 he was sent off as the Rams lost 3-1 to the newly renamed Margate in the annual Isle of Thanet Gazette Cup match at Hartsdown. The Gazette said that Carl was dismissed for "a heavy and totally unnecessary foul" and he'd earlier been 'credited' with an own goal after Ronnie Murrock's shot hit him on its way into the net.

In September 1989 Carl returned to Hartsdown Park to join Margate and made his first appearance at centre-back in a 1-0 home win over Corinthian in a Southern League Cup tie on 12.9.89. He kept his place for Margate's next nine games and played at left-back in six of them. The Thanet Times said that Carl was "outstanding" in the number three shirt during a 1-0 defeat at Wokingham in the FA Cup on 30.9.89, even though he missed a golden opportunity to equalise at the death. The paper then described Carl as being "dominant" during a 3-0 win over Andover at Hartsdown on 7.10.89.

From late October to the middle of December 1989 Carl barely featured in the first team but on 31.10.89 he scored in a 2-1 home win over Sheppey. Towards the end of the year he regained his first team place and Carl then played regularly for the remainder of the season, showing his versatility by turning out at right-back, centre-back and in midfield. He also played once as a striker. The Thanet Times' report for Margate's 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Witney on 30.12.89 said that Carl was "assured in the extreme" at right-back.

In April 1990 Carl was one of several players fined a weeks' wages after an escapade during Margate's 'double-header' weekend involving games at Witney and Yate on 7.4.90 and 8.4.90 respectively. Carl fell foul of the management for what he later described as "bribing the coach driver to take us into Bristol on the Saturday night." Richard Hemmings and John Love were also fined whilst Gary Moss and Alan Scotting were sacked over the incident.

Carl finished the 1989/90 campaign having scored once in a total of 35 appearances (two as a sub). He also played six games for the reserves.

Carl started the 1990/91 season as a fixture in the side and after playing at right-back in a 2-2 draw at Witney on the opening day of the campaign he was switched to the centre of Margate's defence for a home game with Ashford on 21.8.90. Carl scored in a 3-1 defeat and it was the start of a run of 12 games in the number four shirt. The last of those matches was a 1-0 defeat at Peacehaven & Telscombe in the FA Cup on 13.10.90 and after that Carl fell out of favour. Love took over his role and over the course of Margate's next eight games Carl featured only three times, twice as a substitute. When he came on during a 3-1 defeat at Erith & Belvedere on 20.11.90 it was Carl's final appearance for Margate and after a spell in the reserves he left the club in March 1991 having played 17 times (twice as sub) and scored once during 1990/91. He'd also played five games in the reserves for whom Carl's brother Jason played twice during the season.

Carl rejoined Ramsgate after his departure from Hartsdown Park and during 1991/92 he occasionally turned out for Kent County League side Phoenix Rovers when Ramsgate didn't have a game. In the summer of 1992 he appeared in pre-season friendlies for Margate but stayed on at Southwood for the 1992/93 campaign proper. He was sent off in a match against Folkestone Invicta in September 1992. Carl ended up spending over seven years with the Rams up to and including the 1997/98 season.

After leaving Ramsgate he continued to play local football before retiring in 2002.
